All time al***s...?

All-time favourite album has to be 'The Songs of Distant Earth' by Mike Oldfield. Not only is it an epic musical journey, but it tests most aspects of a system's capabilities. Check out the opening minute, it'll tell you a lot about your system...!
Anybody else got recommendations for me? :-)
Regards,
Gavin

Good to see most people going for something main stream/well know ish for a change, rather than trying to be super cool by putting something forward that no-one's heard of.

Gavin - 'The Songs of Distant Earth'by Mike Oldfield is indeed a great album.
My choice would be 'Seven' by James, followed by 'Blue is the colour by The Beautiful South.

Since the title of the thread is 'best album of all time', I think we have to acknowledge the more mainstream albums in favour of perhaps our personal all time favourites.
If our own personal favourites were truly the best of all time as well, then they'd be mainstream too.
The reason I put forward this idea is that we would be forcing our friends to listen to the album, they would go on to recommend the album to their friends etc. The exponential growth of sales would force the album maintstream.
(And if we're being brutally honest we may well decry the artiste for 'selling out'!) :-)

I've been thinking about this one - there are so many good ones (Unknown Pleasures, Correct Use of Soap, Close to the Edge, Disintegration etc.) but this one popped up on an old tape I found in the car - sound quality was crap but the songs, that Sax, the Hammond Organ, the subtle but insistent driving and of course Hammill's voice!!!
I just had to dig out the vinyl when I got home. My wife wasn't over impressed though - "What the hell's that row?" she said - its like being 16 again!

Strange is'nt it 'cos Animals would struggle to get in my top ten Floyd albums never mind all time top ten.
Though I think 'The Final Cut' is one of their best so there you go.

Last night my wife was out, so I played 'Godbluff', rapidly followed by 'Still Life', then 'Silent Corner' (she returned during A Louse is Not a Home - "What is THAT??? ").
My daughter (aged 2) came in to the room during Sleepwalkers and started dancing and continued to dance so for the rest of the session!
VdGG were really a dance act!
p.s. there was a news item last night about the Marquee re-opening somewhere in London. The article included several posters advertising the acts who had played there including Van der Graaf!!

Gavin,
'The Songs of Distant Earth' by Mike Oldfield.
I just received a sealed vinyl copy from an Ebay auction. Apparently, it's supposed to be pretty rare on vinyl.
Sounds good.
I'm trying to work out what the opening 2 minutes are supposed to tell me about my system.

going back to the topic...
Not Available - the Residents
Music for a new society - John Cale
Pet Sounds and Smile [even in various bootleg forms]
and whilst possibly not a real contender for best album best live album could well be something like the Dead's DP 4 or 8
There doesn't seem to be much cross over between rez fans and the naim forum!

Reading your post made me realise my smiths ommision.
The queen is dead is IMO the best british band album of the 80's . Saw Morrisey at the Albert Hall last week and he was really entertaining, especially when he dusted off a couple of classic Smiths tunes. This band were a one off.

Its so difficult at least on desert island disks you choose 5 or 10. But it would have to be between 2112 Rush and DSOTM Floyd.
