Poor spelling and lack of spell checker
Posted by: Don Hooper on 24 January 2010
Comments are made on this forum about poor spelling and grammer. I am dyslexic (I think it is spelt that way but I could be wrong)so why does the forum not have a spell and grammer checker?

Hi Don, welcome & sympathy with your problem, a family member has the same. Bright as a button and got a 2.1 degree in physics with a lot of strife & struggle. But the physics stuff symbols etc was no problem what so ever, strange eh ??
The forum has a spell checker, the words with wiggly lines are wrong, but no grammar.
What you might want to do is write out on MS-Word - using that spell & grammar & thesaurus stuff
Then when done, left click & wipe (highlight) all the text, right click & copy
Go to the forum open a "new" or "reply" & paste.

Hi Don Hooper,
I would have thought this was a function of the browser rather than the forum?
Anyway, I agree with Mike-B in using Microsoft Words facilities as it is probably the most complete system.
I'd just like to mention that if you are using the Firefox browser, there is an addon which somewhat allows for integrating external editors in the browser. Its called "Its all text". I use it all the time with my favourite text editor, GNU Emacs.

There's another add on for Firefox called "After the Deadline" which may also be an option.

The alternative Don is Print and be damned, I hope no one on here would be so superscilious (?) as to complain

It would appear so at times, when the "holier than thou's" get going. As long as the first and last letters are correct, it has been noted that a word can be deciphered. There are a few there for their, here for hear around, but hey it's all part of lie's rich sweet pattern.
Then there's the punctuation........

Hey guys, this is a bit sensitive, dyslexia ain't funny, if we can help someone, lets do it on this post.
We can pull the wings of the holier than thou high academic spell correctors on other posts.

Don what browser are you using? Firefox has a good add on speller checker /dictionary, but not a grammar checker.
As already said Word has spell and grammar checker built in.
Mike my comments were aimed at those who may have been the source of Dons post. Your point taken though.
Don not sure if any of these can help you, I Googled "spell and grammar checkers" it found a couple of programmes and a couple of on-line resources.

I just checked my browsers.
I normally use Google Chrome, that spell checks in background on the forum, but not as good as MS tho'.
Microsoft Windows Explorer does not do nuffink. Stange eh, considering its got one in the Office system. But it looks like it will host some add-on's
Firefox, got it but something I never use, it has one that needs to be activated. My wife has another Firefox Rev & its checker is activated all the time.

Safari checks your spelling, but not grammar - Amiga browser doesn't do much chocking.

Actually, the semicolon is used to separate two independent clauses -- a dash would be more appropriate.

Try this...
Actually I think it's a good sign when people are interested in grammer, punctuation, spelling, etc. Not to an anal level but it's good that we try to ensure that people can understand our postings.
At least in this forums the all in uppercase posts are mostly avoided and people don't start being bitchy about the quality of the writing - the case in other forums.

I still post, and I must have left more typos and errors than most. What is worst is if I have been lucky enough to enjoy a good evening first, possibly on Polish Wodka! Then I sometimes neglect to test with Word first!
If I suspect I may have posted the night before [but am not certain!] then I have to check, and offer due apologies ..... !

Beg to differ fellow.
The point being presented there was that people are 'interested' in grammar, puntuation, spelling etc. Simply to assist in understanding the point being made.
At no point is the suggestion made that it is mandatory , nor is the post anything but polite. I don't know whether you require instruction by English class but I venture to say you have nothing to learn from a small minded idiot lesson.

Ps, I have just used the edit button to tidy up the above post. No biggie.

If someone can't be bothered to use correct spelling and punctuation in the their postings, one might be tempted to think that the content isn't worth reading.
In the coure of my work I receive emails from a wide variety of sources. Any that suffer from such ills are likely to receive less attention than the correctly written ones. If they want my attention, they could at least use decent English.

Wow, there appears to be a number of posters here who seem to display apparent superiority complexes and who's condescending attitude to others actually makes me want to disregard their posts.

'Lo Jim, I don't suppose you refer to this rather scary polemic?
Paul.
