More sad news - no this is more than sad it is tragic - without Davy Graham I doubt I'd be interested in music - why?
Because music doesn't get any better than his masterpiece with Dame Shirley
Remember when this came out against a backdrop of beat music and sickly ballads - this was different: real folk music in a contemporary setting.
To say this is a great album is an understatement, it is one of the pinnacles of 20th century art and in so being captures the music of bygone ages and presents them in a joyous and pure form. This pairing of folk's finest voice (Shirley Collins) with one of the world's finest acoustic guitarists (Davy Graham) had a notable influence on the folk scene. Davy redefined folk accompaniment with his imaginative, rhythmic backing, which drew from jazz, blues and Middle Eastern music as well as mainline folk. Performed with tasteful restraint and selected with imaginative eclecticism, the album contains Rif Mountain, where you can hear his influence on guitarists such as Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Richard Thompson and Jimmy Page.
Is Folks Roots New Roots the greatest vinyl record in history - I'm inclined to say yes.
Davy - you'll be missed - the world is the poorer without your talent.
I'm very saddened to hear this news.
