Toslink to DAC from TV & DVD but with LOUD noise
Posted by: Caffeine on 31 March 2010
It's my first post here. So far I'm using the NAIM XS+DAC+Sonos(input 1) for music and I love it.
I'm also connecting the DAC to TV (Verizon Fios box, input 2) and DVD (Sony blueray, input 3) via Toslinks. However, when I play TV(input 2) or DVD(input3), the speakers only produce very loud and unpleasant NOISE. Is there anything wrong? I'm thinking that perhaps I connected it wrong? Any suggestions to fix it? Sorry I'm really a newbie when it comes to Hifi so please ignore the stupidity here...
Thank you very much.
*edit: there is no audio signal at all except for the noise*

You need to set the TV and DVD digital outs to output pcm rather than bitstream.

You are probably trying to send the DAC a 5.1 DD or DTS signal, which it will not play.
Have a read of the DAC manual for details on it's digital input capabilities.

Should be a set up menu for both the TV and DVD (usually a button on the remote). Go to Audio - digital output - and switch the output to the pcm setting. I'm sure its in the manuals.

I had the same problem trying to hook up the digital out from my Sony Briava. Turns out that it's not possible to do from the Sony, which is getting a signal from a Motorola digital cable box. I also went into the menu on the cable box, but could not change the settings to output PCM.

Same for me with my Sony Bravia. My Blu-ray player works with PCM via TV on all Blu-ray discs but only on some DVDs. No other video source I have does PCM. I run analogue to the SN from my Motorola cable box and from my region-free DVD player. Oh well.
