How do you approach new music?

From time to time, everyone expands their music experience by adding new music to their collection.
So how do you go about making the unfamiliar into the familiar?

A first, ... a second, ... a third, ... a four listening ...
If it does not click I give up, but if there is something there, I can persist for a very long time, with it.
It took twenty years for me to enjoy Beethovem's Missa Solemnis from end to end!
Sometimes a study of the score can help, but usually only to clarify what poor recording has not conveyed.
Sometimes an little bit of reading about the composer helps to understand the motivation behind the composition ...
Really it is seat of the pant, intuitive stuff for me though. Always has been.
Strange to say I came to some music ui love through playing as well.

Usually radio, followed by read of a review on Amazon and a listen on U tube.
I also find uncut magazine a useful guide of whats new.
A few mistakes along the way.....

I follow my ears. I tried asking my friends for recommendations but that wasn't helpful. Instead I follow this code, "Never let great music go unnamed." Wherever I am, if I hear something that catches my fancy I make sure to ask what's playing. Shazam has been a godsend in this regard but it's only successful about 20% of the time. I also make a habit of going to the Philharmonic whenever there's a sale on tickets. Finally, by reading up on my favorite artists I learn about and explore their inspirations and contemporaries.

Sometimes I'll play a new CD in the car while driving a few times, I'm less likely to turn it off and I seem to accept new music more easily that way.

Play the music wherever, whenever, I get the chance to. Be it in the car or on my home system, Occasionally introduced on radio.
I find that if I enjoy first time then it gets replayed again and again, hearing new aspects with every replay.
If not enjoyed. Then stowed away for replay in another mood/ setting. This goes especially for recommended pieces. In the past I have discounted music that did not appeal on first listening and have revisited years later to a very different conclusion.
When I was 17-18 yo I could not abide reggae, a different story by 20 yo.
