Please recommend me some Pink Floyd

Posted by: GaryP on 21 November 2010

Perhaps 30 or more years too late, but finally I got around to buying DSOTM yesterday.

So my Floyd collection is now up to the grand total of 2 - DSOTM and Wish you were here

Where do I go from here, given I like these two albums because they are not overly conceptual, experimental?

Thanks
Gary

Meddle and then I love Animals but it is different to the two you have bought.

After 'Dark Side of the Moon' and 'Wish You Were Here' I would recommend 'Animals'.

'Animals' is my favourite, a little rougher sound. Those three albums are for many the peak of the band.

'Meddle' has the wonderful 'Echoes' on (all of) side two, and 'One Of These Days', but the other tracks are not as strong.

'The Wall' is another favourite of many, but is dominated by the lyrics and narrative. It has some outstanding individual tracks, but it isn't an album I would recommend to follow 'Dark Side..' with.

I am quite sure ROTF will recommend some Syd Barrett lead Floyd albums, but they were a very different band in their early days, and although you might enjoy those albums, it is perhaps not what you are seeking if you want to hear more by the band sounding like they did in the early 70's.

Their best 2 IMHO and no shame in stopping there but I haven't heard any post Water's Floyd

I bought a whole lot lately when HMV had them all on special and for me they definitely had a "you had to be there feel about them"

Mind you 1000's here will disagree but it just goes to prove how catholic our taste is here.

Do you want to hear the progression that they made? if so start at the beginning I'd start with....

Relics more Psychedelic and good overview of the Sid Barrett era Floyd if this floats you boat get Piper At The Gates Of Dawn & A Saucerful Of Secrets

Next Meddle to see the transformation to Progressive Rock Floyd and post Sid Barrett.

If you like Meddle you'll love Wish You Were Here a homage to Sid Barrett

And if you like them you've got to have Pink Floyds magnum opus albums Animals & The Wall

After that the music is still great but it loses its edge especially when Roger Walters departs from the band, but they are still worth a listen I like them but I'm a big Floyd fan and they are....

The Final Cut, Momentary Lapse Of Reason and The Division Bell

Hope this helps.

I like Meddle, echos was on a station when it came out and I was driving with high school friends in a beach fog up a canyon, it was quite wonderful. My college roomie had it and I love the other songs tho they're quite different. one has a hound dog adding to the backup, it's so funny as I remember my dog laying her ears back and chin scrunching as she started up.

Thanks everybody.

Looks like Meddle and Animals will be my next PF buys. I am familiar with the Wall but do not have a copy.

After that I will need to decide whether to go back to the beginning or go post Walters.

Thanks

Gary,

if you have a turntable, treat it to the London 1966 / 1967 (Vinyl / CD Set)
Available from Burning Shed
Bit of a bargain for £14.99

Stick with the 70s stuff - Meddle, DSOTM, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall. Obscured By Clouds isn't too bad and has a few nice tunes on it, but ultimately it's second rate stuff. I say skip Atom Heart Mother.

The 60s stuff, while experimental, just doesn't work very well, and the 80s and 90s stuff is the band past its prime.

Well, of course, we can only express our own opinions. Todd just happens to be right: not all Pink Floyd albums were equal!

I don't dislike the 60's stuff but neither do I hold it in the same lofty heights I do the 70's. I also like the 80's /90's stuff, a lot more than the 60's stuff. The Division Bell is a great album, IMO.

Also, David Gilmour's Gdansk disc is well worth checking out.

I'd recommend using the search function as this forum has more threads on Pink Floyd than there are recordings available from them (and that includes all the bootlegs)

All you really need IMHO is the box set below and an album like Magnesium Proverbs or the early BBC sessions and the Live in London set and you've got it.

Next up buy the Crazy Diamond set by Syd Barrett.

I have most of the Floyd albums, but the ones I've mentioned plus Wish You Were Here and The Wall are the only ones I play these days. Atom Heart Mother are Meddle is worth the odd spin though.

I find the later stuff a bit middle of the road and after Roger Waters left then so did I - I bought one Gilmore elpee, but it only sounds right in an elevator.

Here is a poor recording, but a great performance. I sometimes think the band were at their best with Bob Klose on lead guitar.

If you like DSOTM and WYWH then like me I think you'll find the early stuff a bit too psychedelic / experimental.

For me Pink Floyds "Golden Age" is Meddle, Animals, Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall and The Final Cut. The early stuff and the later stuff does nothing for me. Many people don't like The Final Cut but I do. I think it's worth buying for it's last track 'Two Suns In The Sunset'.

My advice would be start with The Final Cut or The Wall and work backwards. You'll know when it's time to stop.

Regards,
Steve.
