Uniti + iPod Connecting Cable

Posted by: Obsessed1 on 23 November 2009

I have a Uniti, and am wondering about the best way to connect up an iPod to it. I understand from reading the manual that there is a special Naim cable that connects the iPod to the back of the Uniti. Questions:

1) Does this by-pass the iPod dac and allow the Uniti to decode the digital signal?
2) Can you browse the iPod via the Uniti remote?
3) Does anyone have one of these? And if so how does it sound/work?

Thanks.

1) See "Other Inputs" in the specifications on this page:

http://www.naim-audio.com/products/naimuniti.html

2) From the manual:

http://www.naim-audio.com/down...0Reference%20Eng.pdf

"The iPod’s own interface and controls will not operate while it is connected to NaimUniti."

See section 9.3 on page E20 for info on browsing the Ipods music

It is the N-Link and it is available from your dealer.

OK; got how it works.

However, nothing in the manual or the links provided above indicates whether using the N-Link by-passes the iPod's internal DAC and uses the DAC in the Uniti (i.e., like the Wadia iPod dock). Does anyone know?

By the way, I must say this thing is a cracking bit of kit. Unbelievable flexibility and a user face to rival Apple.

From the first link:

"Other inputs: Ethernet and iPod (analogue)"

If it's analogue from the Ipod, then it's using the internal Ipod DAC.

Obsessed1,
I've been using the Wadia 170i Trasport with my Uniti for a couple of weeks now. Connection is via the standard Wadia-supplied coaxial digital cable; the combo sounds ok to me but i am not exactly blown away as I had hoped...perhaps the the Naim DC1 cable is a MUST in order optimise the system. Tried the N-Link when demoing the Uniti and i loved the seamless operation that the N-Link procures, you have full control over the ipod via the Uniti remote which is not the case with the Wadia, sound was coherent and full. Have not done A-B tests but imagine the Wadia to be sonically superior to the N-Link.
cheers, Vik

My impression from the road shows was the ipod and cable N-Link? would by pass the iPod DAC when plugged into the front panel. My impression may have been wrong off course.

Wasn't that the DAC and not the Uniti?

I guess I was wrong then, not unusual.

I think you are right nap-ster.
