Jehovah's Witnesses.....A new approach?

Posted by: Chillkram on 01 November 2006

The doorbell rang this evening and so I answered the door (as I usually do in such circumstances). As I gazed upon the two serenely smiling individuals standing there I recognised a familiar situation and my heart sank a little. I was either going to have to tell them to f**k off (a bit rude, really) or engage in a debate I could not particularly be bothered with, as there was champions league football on the telly at the time (in retrospect the debate would have been preferable!).

As I looked at them my face must have betrayed my thought....'Oh, no!'

One of them handed me a leaflet and said "Thank you for opening your door. We are in the area tonight handing out leaflets for you to read in your spare time". Then they turned around and walked back up my garden path. I just stood there for a while watching them go, slightly taken aback, before going back inside to watch the football.

My question is; is this a new soft sell approach that has been adopted by the Jehovah's Witnesses in an attempt to change the widely held view that they are a doorstep nuisance rather than an organisation with a serious message? Or........

Were these two just a little less committed to the cause than they should be?

Currently in the news here in Sweden is some owners of mid sized companies that refuses to have anything to do with trade unions because of their christian belief.

Wonder where in the Bible it says that trade unions are a no no?

I think people coming to your door unsolicited are an intrusion - particularly so if they pitch up after dark.

I have no objection to people handing out leaflets or attempting to engage passers-by in the public domain setting of the High Street but door-stepping infringes personal liberty and puts pressure on the door-steppee.

Regarding religious persons, I just say I am a devout atheist.

Once, just once I had a pair of JWs turn up at my home, which at that time was rather rural.

I invited them in and made a pot of tea...

As it happened I had already got Handel's Messiah in the granophone, ready for a planned listen. I invited them to join in the great musical experience, which was not punctuated by any conversation. They excused themselves after an hour when Part The First ends! Parts The Second and Third awaited their, and my, delictation...

They left no literature, and never came back, but I reckon that they thought I was a lost cause, if a reasonably civil one!

Dear Mark,

The best bit was my brother's expression, as we shared the house at that time! He hated that Music, but agreed the plan was a good one!

Aye, I am back! Fredrik

Dear Fredrik

Perhaps I'll do the same when/if they return and invite them in to listen to some Iron Maiden!!
