Good question. I'm just waiting for prices to get more reasonable now Christmas is over and I'll import a PS3 from the US. I won't even buy a single game for it, it will just be used purely as a Blu-ray player.
Apparently Sony are having to massively subsidise the PS3 in order to sell them in sufficient quantity in the hope they will make the money on the games. Unfortunately for Sony, they seem to have produced one of the best performing and most featured blu-ray players out there, including (and substantially undercutting) their own standalone player. Thanks Sony, don't mind if I do.
Don't forget, blu-ray is region coded for new releases. I'll import a player from the US as I'd rather be tied to their release schedule than the one we have in the UK

Neil,
Best place for reviews would be AVS but unfortunately they tend to bundle discusion of particular products into single threads (unless you have a very specific question) which quickly become too big and unwieldy to get into if you're starting from scratch. You could try this one:
One-and-Only PS3 as Blu-Ray Player Thread
but it's already over 2,000 posts. I'll summarise:
As a blu-ray player, it's better than the Samsung, about on a par with the Panasonic and Sony, probably not quite as good as the Pioneer which will be available soon but at a cost of $1500. However, unlike the others it has HDMI 1.3 and contains more audio support (Dolby TrueHD, etc.) than any of the standalone blu-ray players do at this time.
Given that there will soon be a surplus of PS3s in the States, I'm expecting to pay no more than around £350 - £400 all in. A good place to start would be this discussion regarding the dilema Sony face with the PS3 as a blu-ray player:
Did PS3 just kill Blu-ray, and not save it?

I got the PSP3 (60GB model) and it is amazing. The games are beautiful and the DVD play back are excellent at 1080p, 1080i or 720p depending on your TV via the HDMI cable. The blu-ray DVD movies are much better than the up-scaling versions when setting at the SAME resolution (i.e., 720p). The graphic engine in the PSP3 must be very powerful to produce such high quality movie play-back. The play-back from standard DVD movies are also better than the normal Sony DVD players (with up-scaling ability).
