I have found a Blu-Ray movie that is in 1080p and full 16:9 (no black bars)!!

Hi I had to post this as I moaned previously that directors maintain the cinema ratio on Blu-Ray, so that regardless of your 16:9 plasma/lcd screen, you always have black lines top and bottom...

Now I know some forum members are fine with this as this is the ratio the artist intended, but I personally bought a 50" screen so I could experience hi-def movies as best as I could. No complaints here, but I could not find a movie that utilised the full screen and I am not prepared to go down the Sky route for HD yet as I am conscious it is a con.

Anyway, apologies for the pre-amble, but the film is called "Cass" and is a true story about a black child brought up by white parents in rough parts of London. It is a B-rate film - corny acting but still in full 1080p with no black bands at the top and bottom!!!

Regards,

Jon

Spider-man 1 is 16:9

And The Dark Knight flips from 16:9 to 2.35:1 - the astonishing IMAX shot scenes are full frame, and the rest of the movies is superscope.

And even though I knew it did this (flipped between ratios), I didn't actually notice it until right near the end.

There are loads of movies in 16:9. Hellboy 1 & 2, the Batman movies from the 80s and early 90s, and Saving Private Ryan are a few that spring to mind. There are also many wonderful movies in a wider ratio and you're missing out by restricting your choice based on whether there are black bars on the screen.

Its not that, Tom, it has to be in full 1080p and full 16:9.

That's when you really appreciate high resolution......

Saving Private Ryan is the only one of that bunch not yet available in Blu Ray and hopefully it soon will be.

So Jon,

You'd rather watch a B-grade film in "hi-def" than a great movie with some black bars top and bottom? Is that what you're saying? Or are you just looking for some demo material to impress your friends? I love the hi-def blu-ray experience but honestly, once I am engrossed in the plot, it really becomes a minor factor. Having said that, I find the Pixar stuff (and Kung Fu Panda!) to be great eye candy and will often have that running when listening to music.

Life's too short to watch crappy films just because they are hi-def.

Cheers,

Winky

I'm not that extreme Winky!!!

(Anyway as a side issue and I know you are of similar mind-set to me, I've just bought tickets to see Dennett/Dawkins lecture on the evolution of religion in March!!)

You should really get one of the new Philips 56-inch 21:9 LCD televisions.
