Plagued by Ghosts

Posted by: Rasher on 29 May 2007

When I was born, my parent’s house was haunted. I lived there up until the age of five and the place was fairly badly haunted by the ghost of a small girl that used to play with my sisters toys, which would be found scattered over the house when my parents came home. My father at one point set up some search lights in the garden to catch what was going on, but never caught anything. My mother would be bathing us and would hear my father come home; come in the front door, walk up the stairs, open the bathroom door, but no-one was there and he didn’t come home until much later. My grandmother had problem with the porch door once and it jammed open (!). Everyone tried to close it, but it wouldn’t budge. After leaving it for a while my mother closed it normally. My sister used to wake up screaming practically every night. The local priest did an exorcism on the place and according to my mother it all stopped, but when my parents separated when I was five and we left, my father always claimed that things continued at that old place, but was someone else, a man.

The house I’ve just left was haunted too. I used to feel guilty that my daughter, and later my son, would be in the room that I would never sleep in myself. Over the years we have had lodgers, and my mate Claire used to have that room. She once freaked out because a woman came through the door and stood by her bed. Much later, my wife’s cousin lodged in that room and woke one night to find a woman bending over her. The descriptions of the woman were the same. We had the place “cleansed” but something always remained and there was a funny atmosphere at the top of the stairs. Both of them slept with the light on for the time they stayed there.

We moved house this March. Guess what!
Several times I’ve gone to the door when the doorbell has rung to find no-one there. It’s a decent stretch to the road down the steps and no-one could run off before I saw them. It happened twice last night, once luckily when my daughter was near and she heard it too, because otherwise I’d think I was going crazy. What really is weird is that it doesn’t sound exactly like our doorbell! It’s the same ring, but it’s louder and more shrill.
We hear footsteps upstairs running around, like a small child, but on inspection ours are fast asleep. I didn’t think much of it at first, but now it’s getting strange. I’ve heard a conversation going on upstairs on more than one occasion and talking about it with my wife yesterday, she now confesses that she has been hearing whispering while standing on the landing. We had a couple of friends stay over recently to babysit, and they were quite alarmed at the sound of running on the landing and two adult voices upstairs. When we talked it over I mentioned that it was definitely two voices because they talk over each other, they freaked out because they said that was exactly what they heard too, but hadn’t pinpointed that was what they were hearing.

The children don’t seem to be aware of anything luckily, and to be honest, the house has such a wonderful welcoming atmosphere that we are quite happy to leave things as they are, it isn’t a problem, but it’s weird that these things seem to follow me around. We’ll hear something going on practically every night now. The doorbell is getting to be a pain in the butt though (it only happens to me – no-one else has ever had it).

I guess if it gets much worse we’ll have to do something, but it’s a funny old business. I’ll be there on my own for a week in August, and I must admit, I’m not looking forward to that!

Thanks Steve. I have no trouble with love being a bond stronger than life and death. My grandfather had a very similar thing happen when my grandmother died.

Two hours ago I was sitting in the living room with my wife, when we heard a thundering of footsteps on the landing. As usual, we looked at each other, I went upstairs, the landing is in darkness and the children are sound asleep - mouths open and in the land of nod. We just laughed. I still feel nothing on the landing even though all this stuff is happening. There is no presence and no feeling of anything being there, and it isn't in the slightest bit scary. Weird!

One of my girlfriend's best friends is the youngest of three. The middle child was her brother who died aged about five, before our friend was born. When he was alive he used to love riding his trike up and down the hallway of their house. One day our friend, when she too was aged about five, walked up to her mother and asked who was the boy she kept seeing riding a trike in the hallway.

If they exist why do only some people see them?

to believe in ghosts means you are religious.

As I know for a fact when dead people become worm food or smoke I know that ghosts cannot exist.

Its like all these types of things, it makes people feel different from the herd.

If it flouts your boat why not ask in that TV programme that appears on UKTV living, you know the channel fat women watch all day instead of getting a job. You can see if they can 'feel' them, whoOOoOoooo.

HOW do you KNOW that, Gary? Are you reincarnated or something?? Smile

Well its simple really, those that have seen ghosts are the same sort of people who get abducted by aliens. In both cases there is never a shread of evidence.

Infact here we are in the age of cameras. The uk has the highest amount of cameras per person than anywhere in the world. Presumably there is some much evidence now that the existence of ghosts cannot be refuted...

Oh wait. Nothing.

Hang on though. If you've never had an encounter of any sort and you don't believe, well...it would seem as absurd as being abducted by aliens, and I chuckle at them .
You have to have to see Gary's point of view.

I can understand being people being sceptical but Garyi is rather scathing with his comments, which aren't even correct.

Firstly I am not religious at all. Weddings and funerals are the only time I ever see the inside of a church. I say that neither boastfully or regretfully.

Secondly, for Garyi to say he "knows for a fact" is bullshit IMO. There are reported phenomena that remain unexplained. If it were a fact ghosts and paranormal activity did not exist these phenomena would have been scientifically disproved. Why can't everyone see them? Why should they? If we were all the same we'd all be Harley Street Doctors or Barristers instead of working our bollocks off to make a living. Remember those pictures they used to print regulary in the newspapers? The ones where if you stared through them a 3-D image would jump out? Well I never ever saw an image. But that doesn't mean there wasn't one there.

There will obviously be hoaxers, who are indeed attention grabbing. However I'm sure Rasher would have confided in a tabloid and maybe made some cash for himself, rather than opening a topic in a hifi forum had he wished to grab attention.

regards,
Steve O.

Shit! I hope Rasher doesn't get abducted by aliens then!

I don't think that ghost sightings and alien abductions/ufo sightings are comparable. Ghosts have been reported in hundreds of different cultures/civilisations for thousands of years, whereas, as I understand it there hasn't been a single ufo sighting reported before War of the Worlds!

I'm fairly open minded about ghosts but have never seen one or experienced anything paranormal. I'd like to though.

Don't count on it. It can be fairly terrifying.
