Mozart Quintet for piano and wind K452

Posted by: Sloop John B on 09 August 2006

I went to my first classical concert today in the National Concert Hall to hear
Schumann Fantasiestuecke for clarinet & piano Mozart Quintet for Piano and Wind

Carol McGonnell - Clarinet
Peter Whelan - Bassoon
Kathy Halvorson - Oboe
John Ryan French - horn
Isabelle O'Connell - Piano

and really enjoyed it.

It was a lunch time concert and Mrs Sloop and the 3 young Sloops came as well.

I have done a search on the forum and K452 has been mentioned a few times but I can't seem to get the classical searches on amazon or cduniverse to give me a reasonable amount of hits to go through, I either get hundreds or none.

So if any of you can recommend a recording of this I'd be much obliged with as much information as possible (catalogue number would be great!)
Also where are the best on-line places to buy classical?

Thanks

Personally for classical I use CDUniverse but that tends to be for fairly obscure stuff.

In Dublin try Tower and HMV since they always seem to have sales on.

Last week I got a 4 CD selection of Futrwangler for Euro 7 reduced from Euro 29. Recordings from 1950's.

Classical is more or less dead and there are super bargains ...

E.G. Complete Mozart in Tower for Euro 100 [and probably not that bad]. Ditto for Bach.

Dear SJB,

The Current EMI issue of Dennis Brain's superb set of Mozart Horn Concertos has this as a coupling, in the most lovely performance by Brain, familly and friends.

It is not the famous recording (contemporary) with Gieseking and Dennis Brain and members of the Philharmonia Orchestra, but another altogether more charming and lovely perfoemance.

On EMI Great recordings Of The Century

Dear Sloop,

It is great to see you took the young sloops to hear the concert. Children have so little exposure to real music these days.

Sloop,
It not only depends on the K.452 performance, but also on what else is on the disc.
Stephen Hough with the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet on BIS CD 1132 are excellent. Lots of other enjoyable stuff on the disc, too.

Ken
