first impression hd-drive

got it today, tried king kong which came free, and also black rain which i bought, picture quality seems very good, didn't blow me away like some people have said it does, might be because my panny downscales it from 720 to 480, slight lip-sync issue worse on king kong than black rain, when i have more time will compare king kong with the sd version that i have, also which i had read somewhere only seems to out-put dd 5-1 at the moment black rain has a dts sound track which would not work, is it worth buying, yes for £130, would have been very dissapointed if i had paid £400 odd for the toshiba hd-player.

Mike 1380,
Out of interest which LCD set have you gone for?
I couldn't see it in your profile but forgive me if you have stated it elsewhere.
Cheers

Simon, it's a Sharp LC37XD1E.

I feed the n-Vi into this via component (getting a Chord Co 3BNC to 15 pin d-sub made up - the screen comes with its' own d-sub to 3 phono adapter lead which is currently used in conjunction with a big QED component cable and a trio of BNC adaptors) and sometimes I genuinely forget that the DVD I'm watching is standard 480/576P.

The TVDrive goes into one of the HDMI sockets.
TVDrive (unlike SKY HD) will take over the upscaling of SD material - it always outputs 1080i ( but would do 720P if I chose) regardless of what I'm watching - but the native res of BBC-HD is 1080i

PS2 goes in via RGB Scart and looks pretty cool too.

Have now added the screen to my profile - hope this helps mate.

Ta!

mike, have you tried the ps2 via component, i find it looks better than the rgb-scart connection on my boys 20" samsung lcd monitor/tv.

Good idea John, but I only have one component in.... and my PS2 only gets used about 2 hours a month - the n-Vi gets 10 times the use.

The de-interlacer on the Sharp is good so the gaming (whilst it would look better) certainly doesn't disappoint.

For the tiny amount of PS2 use I haven't even considered spending money on a component cable - should I get a PS3 it'll use the spare HDMI socket.

Cheers dude! Smile

yes mike buy a ps3, i would if i didn't have the 360, also the component cable i bought cost £7.98 from game and seems to work very well.

I have played a little with the 46" version of Mike's Sharp and I must admit there were times when I was quite amazed at how good it was, this next door to a Pioneer 427XD. The Pioneer always had the punchier colours, but sometimes, this made the Pioneer look oversaturated. Also, the Sharp's red reproduction is better, probably thanks to the extra 'crimson' colour used in the Sharp. Red is most panels' achilles heel and the Sharp shows that extra work on the colour gamut is probably the best way forward, more than concentrating on pixel resolution.
