powering a snaxo?

Posted by: Matt worlock on 23 May 2003

Hi there,

I was just wondering if its better to power a snaxo with a dedicated hicap, or if its poss to power it with a supercap & if this would sound better than the hi even though it is also powering a pre??

Thoughts on this one.... Big Grin please Smile

Cheers Tom,

So to clarify...you're saying that a snaxo needs a power supply ( Smilethis I know Smile) & a super is better than a hi (this also makes sense Smile), but whilst a super is excellent for the pre does the additional connection of the snaxo compromise its performance?

Have you gone active if so what arrangement do you have? Razz

cheers

Matt,

Tom's point is that the SNAXO needs its own, 2nd SCAP. There are several threads asserting that you can run with one, but it's an unofficial, disapproved by NAIM (I asked and got a reply to this effect from Richard) approach.

Although, IIRC, Ron Toolsie recommended powering the SNAXO from the same Supercap as the preamp if a second Supercap was not available, he did state that a second Supercap dedicated to the SNAXO is preferred (search for this topic).

I have not tried Ron's configuration but have used both a dedicated Hicap and Supercap for a SNAXO. The Supercap is well worth the extra. Do not hesitate to get a Supercap if possible.

Matt--

I have heard the difference between a Hicap and a Supercap powering a SNAXO. The improvement rendered by the Supercap is hard to credit--it is pretty dramatic. Musically, everything is more in tune, rhythms are (much) more explicit, the relationship between musical lines becomes a lot more obvious. Sonically, the Supercap removes a layer of fuzz and noise; improving clarity, articulation, and speed (!).

This is in the context of the best systems I've heard--you need a CDS2/LP12/Geddon/Aro/NAT01 type front end to take full advantage, and to have a 52/252/552 type preamp. If you don't, the Supercap is still better but you're better served by investing the funds further towards the front.

Best Regards,

Bob

I've done this upgrade in my system recently, and it was a very nice upgrade - it really helped to pull things together.

I originally ran it with a black SNAIC-5, but a black burndy was another big jump again - more depth and drive.

cheers, Martin
