Mains burn in

Posted by: smike42 on 07 January 2004

I know it's been discussed a lot recently but how long and do you need the speakers playing or just the kit on?

My new spurs are about 1 week old now and the CDS3 about 3 weeks.

thanks

Just the kit on. I noticed changes for up to 12 weeks, though the swings during the first 6 weeks were much larger...the first 3-4 weeks were torture

I installed 4 - 20amp lines and then moved and reinstalled the same. My observations:

First install burn in was 1-2 months. It was interesting because my equipment ran warmer. Second install burn in was less than 1 week. I suspect it's the equipment burning in further and not the line. Just my observation.

Laurie

Thanks for that - a month of torture to look forward to!

Guadalupe...I assume that is a compliment?!!

( I cannot think of a suitably pithy reply right now!)

Smike......the upside is that there should be immediate improvements in clarity, seperation and detail......the potential should be obvious from the outset, however the presentation is likely to fluctuate between thin and bright, and warm and mushy....do persist..the final result is well worth it

yes, so is it right. Not so long ago I’ve changed all the 4 units in the SBLs and from the first moment I felt the improvement in every register. Even the burning-in process was no torture but yes, the speakers did produce funny things for 6-8 weeks.

Laurie,

Yes the first playing sounded much better than the previous set up but the system seems different every time I listen - your variation description fits precisely. I have quite a few changes since my system was last in an ideal enviroment the mains is just one of them. I guess I could leave the system on and go away until spring arrives!

thanks

HI,
Have posted on this on the 'spur begins' thread, but you notice chages quite drastically in the first 4 weeks - well I have. Its generally positive stuff too, althogh you can listen one day and not a lot chages, but then the next....wierd eh!

Well time passes and I'm now 3 weeks in and things seem pretty good to me. If this is torture then I can't see what the fuss is about.
How does it sound - well great really certainly better than week 1 and more consistent. I guess the biggest change is in the bass which has now increased in presence but is very tight Led Zep never sounded so good. Sax also sounds exceptionally good but if things keep getting better then I'm looking forward to Easter this year.

In my experience, the last "bit" of burn-in is when the top end aquires a silky delicacy, and the whole system just sounds more effortless
