Greatest Band of the 20th Century

I could not resist because of the greatest vocalist post.

I would have to say the Beatles

Dire Straits? Smile

Or Led Zeppelin.

Very tricky, but in no particular order I'd pick my favourite five as

  • Amon Duul II (Tanz Der Lemmings)
  • Beatles (Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band)
  • Creedence Clearwater Revival (Bayou Country)
  • Half Man Half Biscuit (Trouble Over Bridgewater)
  • Incredible String Band (5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion)

And if I had to pick just one then it's Half Man Half Biscuit

Honourable mentions for Fairport Convention, Martha & the Muffins, Pink Ployd (with Syd), Planxty, Pretty Things and Frank Zappa's various combos.

Dear Howard,

I wanted to post that, but was not quite brave enough! [Seemed like a pop thread...]. Other bands have come and gone, but the LSO, has had wonderful times, with only a few fallow periods (notably, perhaps the early thirties} and such a range, unparalleled, I would have thought by any other... One only has to look at the artists, who associated themselves with this unique, self-governing organisation!

Van der Graaf Generator or Yes?
Smashing Pumpkins or Pearl Jam?
Paw or Screaming Trees?
Beatles or Stones?
Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band or Velvet Underground?
Buzzcocks or The Motors?
Dizzy Gillespie & Charlie Parker or Miles Davis with Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin & Bily Cobham - Bitches Brew era?
Richmond Fontaine or Drive-By Truckers?
The Nolans or The Osmonds?
Bauhaus or Sisters Of Mercy?
um.....

Swervedriver for me please. Or Mahavishnu Orchestra - can't decide.

Fredrik it was slightly tongue in cheek. Saying that the title is " Greatest band " not group.

My choices from your dichotomies are

Van der Graaf Generator (People You Were Going To)
Beatles
Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band (but only just and I still don't understand Trout Mask Replica)
Buzzcocks
The Nolans (because they did a single with Lemmy)
Bauhaus

Sorry, don't know the others to give any view on. Not that my view is of any great importance, of course.

#3: Genesis (of the Selling England by the Pound era)
