I could not resist because of the greatest vocalist post.
I would have to say the Beatles

I think the track "Bed Of Roses" off the Screaming Trees album "Uncle Anesthesia" is the best song of the whole of the 90's.

Has to be the Beatles in terms of pop music, they just changed everything! The sheer creative volume over a short period, which has never been surpassed to my mind, makes them special. I also really love Steely Dan but they are not as influential and ultimately did not make the same leap from critical to commercial success. On a slightly broader scale I would go for the Duke Ellington Orchestra but they perhaps were worthy of a category all of their own so, therefore, transcend comparisons.

John Coltrane classic quartet w. McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison (check out Sun Ship). Gives King Crimson a run for the money, that's for sure. Jazz that rocks!

I notice I nominated Creedence Clearwater Revival as the greatest American band of the 20th Century and, although I'm happy to stick by that, as I still think all their albums except Mardi Grasere great - I'm beginning to think that there is an even better American group. I speak of none other than 'They Might Be Giants' - having just played their first two albums: 'They Might Be Giants' and 'Lincoln', I really think that have something magical in what they do - there are some free tracks available here. It is music for music's sake and they don't seem to be trying to make any great points or change the world - just sing some great songs.
A hardly has an appetite and pokes at food too long
and B can barely bother because all the food is wrong
C likes only candy and chocolate by the box
D is just disinterested in anything you've got
But E eats everything
so toss it on a plastic plate or stick it with a fork
serve it on a shovel or serve it on a spork
yeah E eats everything

I'd go for Amon Duul II as the greatest German band - closely followed by 2)Tangerine Dream, 3)Kraftwerk, 4)Can and 5)Floh de Cologne.

Most of them are great, but what about Neu, Kluster, Faust, The Cosmic Couriers and the Galactic Supermarket? Or DAF even?
My top 10 german bands would be:
1. Tangerine Dream - especially the stuff on Ohr
2. Ashra Tempell
3. Kluster - but not Cluster
4. Cosmic Couriers
5. Galactic Supermarket
6. Neu
7. Lord Krishna von Golonka (not sure if that counts)
8. Guru Guru
9. Popol Vuh
10.Kraftwerk
But I think Klaus Shulze is better than all of them. Likewise Pete Namlook, but I do realise I've got a bit of an obsession there

Good list - I have albums by 1,2,6,8,10 and by Birth Control, Can, City, DAF, Eloy, Embryo, Faust, Grobschnitt, Karat, Klaus Schulze, Nena, Nina Hagen. Stripes and Wallenstein and some others - Amon Duul II are my favourite German band though with Tanz Der Lemmings my favourite German elpee, closely followed by Fleissbandbaby's Beat Show by Floh De Cologne.
I think Atem by T-Dream is an amazing record (I have all the T-Dream records that are on Ohr and agree completely with your endorsement of these).

I forgot about Eloy. They should be in the top 10. I know about Floh de Cologne but somehow I've never heard them
Have you ever tried Bernd Kistenmacher or O Yuki Conjugate?

I really like Alles Ist Gut and Gold Und Liebe. Not so keen on the early ones like Die Kleinen und die boesen - they just don't sound like DAF to me. There was a new album a couple of years ago, issued with a load of remixes. Can't remember much about it so it can't be that good. I have a Gabi Delgado solo album that is pretty dreadful. There are also two albums by Robert Gorl and Pete Namlook - Elektro and Elektro II. I have Elektro II which doesn't sound that much liken either of them but it is quite good.

BEATLES of course. But very few mention the amazing Beach Boys or CSNY, great vocal groups.
I mean, the biggest ones were the Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks,Beach Boys,CSNY, Dead, Airplane,Beefheart,King Crimson, Hendrix,Zeppelin, and, yes, Queen, although we all thought they were hopelessly derivative when they began. Hindsight reveals that in fact they were ahead of their time.
And of course, the Temperance Seven! Now there was a band!

Of the two - I prefer the Temperance Seven by a long way.

The Pasadena Roof Orchestra are entertaining too.

I only have one DAF album and that's Die Kleinen Und Die Bösen - I don't know that I recommend it, but it is interesting music. I'm not familiar with the later stuff.

Try Gold Und Liebe or Alles Ist Gut, both available from Mute.com

At least Ian Paice thinks it is the Beatles.

Yes, i do have seen Purple live recently as well as Ritchie and David with his Whitesnake playing terrible heavy metal, instead of old good hard rock. As you already mentioned Jon Lord is missed and ritchie seems to be get lost somewhere in 16 th century. There is no good replacement for him ( the only one, Tommy Bolin, who was even greater, is dead for about 30 years) So for me Purple are great, but they are shadows of yesterday, whereas the BEATLES ARE TIMELESS.

Has to be AC/DC, the Bon Scott years. Great lyrics and riffs. No matter how many times I've listened to these albums they still put a smile on my face every time.

Never ever get tired of listening to AC/DC. You're right Stubby, they make me smile every time too.

Also...little acknowledged fact, that Brian Johnson was 1 year younger than Bon Scott.
