Looking for top "big band" suggestions on CD?

I love hearing big bands / swing bands live but have nothing of any note in my collection. What would be the first top quality recordings to try?

Is this what I would call old style big band jazz or more "modern"?

Pacific Jazz by Buddy Rich is fantastic. Check out the version of Norwegian wood - brilliant.

Do you have a TT. There are a lot of great swing bands from the original era available on Vinyl.

Of course I have to say Count Basie and Duke Ellington and Woody Herman.

Basie gives out the most direct swing, especially on sides involving Neal Hefti or Quincy jones arrangements. Try to find "The atomic Mr basie" or "The kid from Red bank".

Ellington is more sophisticated of course. Some of his ouput is not out & out swing but great stuff such as "Black & Tan Fantasy" etc. One that swings well is "Piano in the background"

I have one which has both Count Basie's full band and the Duke's playing together. The original LP is called "Battle Royal" it can be got on CD as "The Duke meets the Count". Wind the volume up on that one! Man two full bands blowing in full stride with the two leaders trading piano licks. Great

An LP re-issue I came by recently that swings like crazy is: Quincy Jones "Birth of a Band"

Believe it or not it Ted Heath (of BBC fame) alos made a few recordings that swing well.
