DVD Rom behaving strangely

Posted by: Deane F on 10 May 2005

I have a borrowed Pioneer slot-loading DVD Rom drive (105).

When I connect it using the secondary IDE channel - whether jumpered or connected as slave, master or cable select (I've tried every permutation) - it spits out the disk without reading it.

When I connect it as slave to the primary IDE channel it works okay, but of course it has a detrimental effect on the speed of the HDD.

I have the latest version of BIOS installed on my motherboard (Asrock K7S41GX) and have been right through the BIOS settings to see if there is anything obvious I could change.

It seems to me that if the drive were faulty it wouldn't work consistently on one IDE channel but not the other. I guess the secondary IDE channel might be faulty but my CDRW works fine.

Anybody have any ideas?

Could it be a firmware problem ?

LTD

If it is a firmware problem there is little I can do about it as it has the latest version installed. Also, it isn't my dvd drive but a borrowed one and I'd rather not fiddle with firmware as I understand that it's possible to kill a drive with firmware upgrades.
