Albert hall or the living room ?

Yesterday evening I went to listen to music at a friend’s house with few others – one of them is an excellent violinist. We listened to the stereo and we listened to the violinist as he stood between the speakers and played.
I wondered - why should people buy systems that have to reproduce a place other than the living room? The best goal, I think, is to bring the artists to play solely for you at your own room – and that can be achieved with a good stereo system that terminates with two speakers only.
