What are you doing on record store day?

Nice one Jeremy. Just had a root around the website and there are loads of events to choose from. Confusingly, Rough Trade in London is offering a special 99p compilation on... cassette.

Your record store - and your record player - expects!

Good evening Pop Pickers,

I popped into Rough Trade Notting Hill in the afternoon. Absolutely great to see loads of cool young things in there. Christ, first time in ages when most of the people in a record shop were younger than me. Even a few girls younger than my younger sister looking at lp's. Good to see an economy class section for newish indy lp's. I felt all emotional in the basement. Yes, I have read Nick Hornby's 'High Fidelity'. Great soul section: Stax, Motown and Atlantic. But alas musicians time is different to Greenwich Meantime. So, the 3pm act hadn't even entered the building by 3.10, so I headed up Portobello Rd/market.

Fortunately the clock was ticking slowly at Rough Trade East, off Brick Lane (Naim/PMC speaker system). I caught the jangly student indy sounding Dutch Uncles (similar vein to Frattellis, Lookseeproof, Courteneers & Artic Monkeys) at 5ish. Pretty good.
Again not the youngest in the shop, nor the oldest, phew. I'm the same age as the forums favourite turntable.

Then caught the tube to Pure Groove in Farringdon. Waited in the que at 5.45,let in at 6ish for when the gig started. Graham Coxon- double bass, steel string guitar, drums and vocal and then with electric bass and electric guitar. Material not bad. Music not too derivative but lyrics not inspired. Got impression they hadn't rehearsed. The PRAT factor wasn't as high as it should have been for a live gig (whereas Amy Wine live on BBC Iplayer just now has plenty of PRAT/boogie). Still free gig on a sunny day so can't complain. An act with potential.

Surprisingly the Pure Groove shop doesn't have many records or cd's in stock. Just an artful display along one wall. Maybe they make more money from the bar.

Anyway, good to see record shops packed out.

Not knowing it was RSD, I still bought 3 from Wax factor in Brighton, but they were S/H. Was the idea to buy new?

Popped into San Jose Streetlight, they had live bands playing all day, the one I heard sounded pretty good. If I'd thought to take my Elacin ER-20Ss I would have stayed longer Smile

I was at Rough Trade East from about 10am till 6pm yesterday. Would have stayed longer but was completely knackered by then! Spent a small fortune but saw some great live bands who were certainly new to me in any case. Pictured from top to bottom are Betty & The Werewolves, My Sad Captains (two pictures)and Ebony Bones.
