New prefix - Whow!

Posted by: John on 04 September 2003

I just received my prefix (S type) back from being modified to the new standard. The modification wasn't expensive and the sonic gains are significant! Well done Naim!

More dynamic but smoother, clearer, better tonal color, images are rock solid and a slight level of strain is removed which brings out the contrast in the character of each instrument better. I am sure it will also improve over time.

I suspect the modification is allowing the prefix to be powered more efficiently. The type of sonic gains that I suspect are achieved by adding a Supercap to the prefix.

Can someone at Naim please clarify the following:

1. Has the gap been narrowed between a 52 powered prefix and a supercapped prefix? I was initially under the impression that the modification filtered RF differently. The sonic gains seem to be power related and the noise floor being lowered.

2. Does the modification change cartridge matching between the S and K type prefixes? Do the traditional differences between the S and K type remain the same?

John

How much was the update and did it have to go back to HQ?

Steve, the update cost me about $140Cdn which would translate to about $100US???

Naim sent a kit to my dealer for the mod.

Hi John,
I`m glad you like the mod.
I don't think it's a dealer-level mod. It should be made by Naim in UK and NANA in the States.

The mod has to do with ground/earth layout. Yes the noise floor is lower, so the gap between 52 and supercap power remains, both give better results.
The mod doesn't touch cart matching. Same thing as before between K S ...Just the K is less sensitive to RF.

You are right, I should have said:
The new K is less sensitive to RF THAN the old one.
