"For me it would not be beginner level it would be my dream level and it is a touch sad to find my dream level being dismissed as nothing more than a starting off point "it's OK but......". I just wish these experts could have a little more understanding for potential customers who do not aspire to such dizzy and expensive heights".

This is just one of many emails I receive from new vistors to the forum, it would be a positive move if we we watch out for this and understand. It is not useful or friendly to answer our guests with a dissmissive reply.
I would appreciate your help with this. I do not mean not telling the truth or not giving honest advice, perhaps its just the way we tell it!

Indeed he is. He is obviously fishing, with his latest inform-us-all-of-it sabbatical!
On another note, the history and usage of the term PC interests me less than its more contemporary connotations, which seem to be that the three tenets of basic human rights from Post-Revolutionary France: Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, seem to have been abandoned in favour of the singularly applied notion of Equality, with the Orwellian twist of some being more equal than others... along with your habitul reverse discriminations favouring, say blacks against whites, or non-smokers against smokers, women against men etc. etc.
The above only serve to maintain the barriers between these polemics, that we may otherwise wish to eliminate in a truly free world (in an ontological sense, rather than a *Utopian* one) where intelligence, both collective and individual, alone should triumph....

It's always a nice day for it, have a good one wink

I'm definitely with you on this one, Mick.

Rico - ok, the Kans are sorted, now whatabout the rainforests?

Just a quick note so say, "Not True!" In fact, the post of which you speak was partially a mild apology, since Matthew had so strongly opined that I was being offensive. I realize that I can appear rather condescending (especially as a discussion progresses), even though it's always merely an entertaining discourse to me. I decided to give everyone a break (including me).

Now I have to get back to work.

"Lighten up folks, this is the best and occasionally funniest forum on this ludicrous subject I have ever seen."

"ditto" - Dave Brubeck

..absolutely ludicrous but very entertaining and popular (it appears).

This is the 'Spike Milligan' of forums in my opinion.

Please note that the above comment has no direct connection to Mr. Milligan's recent sad demise.

Christian,

There are far worse things to spend your money on than Naim kit. Although the Naim upgrade ladder is highly aspirational, Naimies don't tend to fall prey to is £1200/m cables and snake-oil improvement products.

Regarding whether just a CD5 (or 2nd hand CDX) will be a noticable enough upgrade over your Marantz, well you did the test last week and your conclusions were the same as mine: definitely!

I am worried: would acquiring a Naim system lead to "Upgraditis"?

christian, not necessarily is the answer. you may be the one who will teach us all how to "control the urge"...

enjoy

As a new member to this forum, many thanks for this posting Paul. I am sure that new members or lurkers may also be put off by the idea that a "real" system is going to be a quarter century upgrading work in progress. Music, for me, is a break from the rat race so I am not keen on joining the audiophile treadmill. The fact is that even very modest systems can provide very high levels of musical involvement, and this, I think, is what music lovers want and naim delivers at all price points. My rega planar 3/planet; 32.5-90; ninka system has given me enormous pleasure at a modest cost. I could have saved even more by staying with my demo keilidhs.

I purchased my 32.5/90 for $800CDN and my Rega planar 3 for $400CDN - i.e. source and amplification for about 500 pounds. You could add a pair of kans and have a superbly musical system for well under 1000 pounds that most music lovers would feel no real need to upgrade.

I think the greatest testement to naim and others reputation is when owners of their more modestly priced systems hang onto them long term and get on with their life long exploration and enjoyment of great music.

cheers,
garth
