CD2 vs CD82T

Posted by: BigH47 on 27 January 2004

A mate of mine bought his CD2 (C'97) round to my place yesterday.V interesting the main difference was that there was barely any difference.Even after 3-4 hours both players were very similar. It was just thought the CD2 v slightly smoother overall, the Arcam CD82T(c '02) held up very well I was expecting a greater difference. Am I right in thinking the CD2 was an "entry" level CDP as there is no provision for xx-caps to be fitted? This seems to go against the usual well thought out responses that the CD82T is "a pile of fetid dingoes kidneys" or some thing equally helpful.
This was no means a scientific test and these words are just an observation of one days listening. It is not an anti NAIM post.
I think I might be looking for new pre or power amp before a new CDP on this evidence.
Perhaps some reponses about the CD2's place in the heirachy might be helpful.

The Arcam 82T is the sleeper in the Arcam range, what was the rest of the gear used?
what where the two CD players sitting on? It is often that the better CD player is out performed if not set up right, So we need more details to sort this out.

System 72-Hi-140 NACA5- Linn Keosas SO 5 shelf.
CD 82T was on my homemade isoplat MDF on balls and nuts. All above was well warmed up.
CD2 was on 3 oak feet on one of the shelves. Cord/Flashback interconnects.
As I said not scientific testing and probably not favouring CD2 as it was cold and then on for about 5 hours.
I'll take my CDP to his place soon when he has his set up back after house rewiring/decorating, he missed an opportunity for dedicated spur(s).
His system 82-Hi 250 SBL.

If I recall a CD3.5 with a HI-Cap gave a CD2 a run for the money, and I had a CDI come back from service, it still beat an Arcam 82T but maybe you are hearing things that I'm not....and I would still take a CD3.5 over an Arcam 82T....so 1. it was the set up ( funny things can happen) 2. the CD player needs service....will do an A/B in the Am (just letting the CDI burn in)
