John Bonham - 30 years gone

Posted by: Iron Cobra on 25 September 2010

It is 30 years today since John Henry Bonham died. Arguably the best rock drummer of all time.

Any personal memories, recollections etc.

Heres mine, August 11th 1979 at Knebworth Park. The best concert I have ever been to. Perfect weather, support bands and of course the headline act Led Zeppelin.

Sadly Led Zep were (just about/ only just) before my time - would have loved to have been to one of their shows.
David Grohl's tribute programme to JB is being replayed on Radio 2 this Tuesday @ 10pm for anyone who missed it first time round. Worth a listen.

Stu!
I was at that concert and you are right, Moby Dick was mind blowing. Wonderful concert all round.

Bill Bruford remains my favourite drummer, mosty for 'Close to the Edge', but the more I listen to John Bonham the more I love his playing.

I have listened to Bonham for thirty years and still his playing reveals new depths. His ability to swing the beat was only matched by Art Blakey, who I know others on the forum also find the closest drummer in style and technique to Bonham.

As for Moby Dick, according to reports it wasn't only fans minds that were being 'blown'. Reputedly the other members of the band enjoyed the company of groupies backstage during that part of the show, and Bonham would solo until the members were ready to come back on stage.

The Earls Courts shows from 1975 are possibly my favourite live recording I have ever heard.

I have one of those programs, a button badge, sew on patch, 2 t-shirts and a scarf.

90p for a programme - in today's currency that would be £3.78. What a bargain - they want £15 quid these days.

My first Zepp gig was Dundee's Caird Hall in 1971 and my second was Glasgow Green's Playhouse in 72

Those '79 Knebworth t-shirts were rubbish both of mine have really shrunk.

Wow guys so great that there are some zep fans on the board, I never managed to see the original line up, just a bit too young at the time of Knebworth (only 13) but did see the O2 concert.

John was a great drummer, every time i watch the earls court moby dick on bootleg DVD it gives me the shivers, my good friend Dave Lewis said the EC concerts were the best.

Lontano

Inside the program there is an onsite catering menu, you could have a banquet for £15

Your right, my t-shirts would probably just fit a 9 year old

There was a decent hour long special on his life presented by Dave Grohl on Radio 2. It's sure to be on iPlayer.

Best wishes

Just listened on iPlayer, (apart from BBC cutting off the last 2 minutes) a great programme.

I didn't realise he had been in such demand and been in so many bands.

Lontano & Iron Cobra - Yes, £15 would buy you 60 lots of egg on toast!

Bristol Colston Hall January 8th 1970.

A long 'Moby Dick' from Bonham and Page playing 'White Summer' on acoustic. Also 'The Lemon Song' which I was obviously too young to understand.
