Calling Mike, JohnR, Mick and Seagull

Best date for all seems to be 28th April.

Is this still ok and would 7.30 onwards suit?

I will give location/contact details later.

Cheers

Seagull

Sounds like you had a good time at your beer festival, even if this wasn't quite up to the expectations of Oktober-fest is Bavaria……..

I'll give you a quick over view of the facts of Saturday evening, but leave comment about the quality to others.

As you might have gathered from another thread, Mick wasn't able to make it - Sue had booked them into a show in London - so that meant the evening was enjoyed by Jon, Mike and myself.

The system that we listened to comprised three sources - dvd, cd and lp
Pioneer DV717 on Sony TV stand
CDS2/CDPS/HiLine on Sound Org/Base
LP12/Ekos2/Akiva/Lingo1/Linto on Audio Tech respectively
The pre was a 52/Supercap on Audiofile Base and
the power amp a Krell KSA200S on spikes (my 135s are at Naim for an unscheduled re-cap).
The speakers were my Wilson System V (WATT/Puppies) with
NACA4 back to the Krell.

The room is 24' x 16' with the speakers firing long-ways and the electronics at the opposite end of the room to the speakers. The speakers sit 2' 6" from the rear wall and 3' from the side walls and are toe'd-in to form a 10' side equalateral triangle with the listener who sits just over half-way along the room.

We took it in turns to play CDs first, mine included
Laurie Anderson - The Dream Before
Linda Ronstadt - A River for Him & Winter Light
Lindisfarne - Fog on the Tyne
Christy Moore - Whacker Humphries
The Proclaimers - My old Friend the Blues

I'll let Mike and John describe their selections - assuming they see this in the Padded Cell!!

My LPs included
Max Boyce - Du its Hard
Pink Floyd - The Final Cut

And my DVDs included
Cliff Richard - The Oh Boy Show
Antonio Forcione - Heart Beat

Mike had to get back to Barracks so we finished at midnight.

Because of the problems with my 135s, we will have another session before long and hopefully pick a day that's better for you and Mick - you were both sorely missed.

Cheers

Mick,

You missed a good evening and good company - but it sounds like you and Sue had an even better time up in London.

I forgot in the previous post, to mention a couple of things.

First Mike brought his Lingo 2 along to compare with my Lingo 1. And without mincing words or giving details, its a very worthwhile upgrade - at least to my ears and Mike's. I have a feeling that Jon wasn't convinced, but I'll let Jon and Mike speak for themselves.

Second, in keeping with the latest tradition, we had Melton Mowbray Pork Pie (Dickinson & Mason - the version that they export from Leicestershire) during the interval, washed down with a bottle of champers - nice.

I'll give my thoughts on how the system sounded later. The Krell has warmed up since Saturday....so I have just enjoyed a pleasant evening with a few more records. If you and Sue wanted to pop over one evening before Saturday you'd be more than welcome.

Cheers

First, thanks to Don for a very pleasant evening, top pork pie and very welcome champagne.

On the boxes side, I've not actually heard the CDS2 before, nor have I heard the speakers and its been a LONG time since I've heard Krell. I've had a 52/Super, and our LP12s are similar except Don has Linto and Lingo 1, I have Prefix/ Lingo 2.

Tghe Krell had not long been plugged in but it still sounded in control of the Wilsons - very impressive speakers btw. The Krell improved notably over the evening IMO; sounded far sweeter and easier as it warmed up. To my ears some of the early music was a little comgested, but there was a fair bit I'd not heard before ( eg. the Linda Ronstadt ).

My choice of CDs started off with Katie Melua's cover of Lilac Wine; very well recorded and a sublime voice. Came across very well. On to A Girl Called Eddie and Bebel Gilberto; the piano on the former was very naturally rendered with more low level detail than I'd heard before. BG just oozed, as she should. On to Slade Alive; paint removed by Noddy Holder on Get Down And Get With It - as it should be

The vinyl from me included the 30th anniversary of Ziggy live - stunning live sound, a real stormer at least as good as the Slade album. Ry Cooder delivered Cancion Mixteca, which is another beautiful track that sounded pretty good at Atkinson Acrees. Vivian Stanshall told us that Terry Keeps His Clips On; he sounded like he was in the room.

At no point did I play ANY Pink Floyd, which has to be a first.

I actually enjoyed watching Sir Cliff; by now time was getting on and the Antonio Forcioni sent poor Jon into a coma.

Thanks again, Don.

Regards

Mike
