HDX software upgrade
Posted by: MDM on 03 August 2009
I realise that this topic is not exactly new but I would like to bring it to Naim's attention again. I am sure that there are a lot of HDX owners out there who are impatiently waiting for the next real software upgrade for the HDX (and not the intermediate releases to sort out some bugs).
I appreciate that Naim will probably prefer to launch the software as bug free as possible, even if it takes a bit more time (and external development). However, we are waiting for almost half a year now ....(I believe it was first expected to be released in March).
It would be nice to hear from Naim when the new software upgrade will be available and what new features will be included (internet radio, ... ? ).

It does exist, is a fairly substantial update with significantly new functionality (in beta testing right now), and, won't be the last update by a long shot. Contact your retailer or distributor for further information.

MDM,
I cannot agree more, IMHO Naim should elaborate on this!
Please provide us a timeframe and a list of bugs that will be fixed/added functionality...
Regards,
Michel

As Naim are currently on their Summer break (although, as usual, I'm sure that many in R&D will still be busy!) then I don't think an answer on this can be given until their return.

MrPlanner, I am not sure where you get your info from (trade member, software developper for Naim, user of Beta version...?) but thank you anyway for your reply.
For me, one key feature that is missing in your list is internet radio. The fact that this would be an add on in the (near future) was one of the reasons for me to buy my HDX in september 2008. Indeed, in the HDX review published in the October 2008 edition of Hi-Fi Choice (but already available on Naim's website in August/September 2008) Paul Stephenson said:
"Yes – I’m keen to add internet radio. It’s totally feasible and the key bits are already in the HDX, but our software guys are insistent that we spend plenty of time testing before release. Much as I’m impatient to see the extra feature, they’re right; we’ll spend quite a lot more time testing before we even release a beta, to selected customers."
It would be rather disappointing if internet radio would not be included in the next HDX software ugrade. Naim is clearly confident enough to include the feature in the NaimUniti so what is the problem in adding it to the HDX?

mdm, internet radio is NOT a feature added in the next release. All available resource has been used on the latest soon to be set free code.Full feature list to be posted as soon as we are back. I hear what you are saying MDM but we have to make choices and core infrastructure, robustness and the new features were all top of the requirement list..

Hi Paul,
Thank you for your reply. So I guess we'll have to wait for a week or so...

Paul,
Thank you for your reply. Naim is of course best positioned to assess what fixes and add-ons are the most critical and allocate resources accordingly. Of course, I welcome any improvements and new features that you will include in the next release but do hope that you have not abandoned the idea of adding internet radio to the HDX in the near future.
For now, enjoy the rest of your holiday.
Kind regards,
mdm

The new features look great! Not sure if it answers the question about cover art though, but I guess we don't have long to wait.
The best thing for me is the new buttons on the GUI - maybe I can now see the text on the active buttons - white on green is awful at the moment

There are some underlying infrastructure items in this release that pave the way for this–at present, there is a numerical "best match" approach as regards the appropriate AMG selection for artwork and track listings, etc., based on region, language, etc.
Keep in mind that this deals with AMG-supplied cover art, as opposed to user-supplied cover art (not sure as to what manner this will be handled by the Desktop Client application in the future).
The changes to music storage hierarchy and other features will make future software releases easier to accomodate (as well as revisions to the Desktop Client, only changed slightly in this forthcoming release to accomodate music store / network share management).

Thanks David,
Maybe I'm the only one complaining, but I think it's rather annoying that for some albums AMG supplies wrong cover art or no cover art at all.
The possibility to add covert art in some way manually would solve this. Perhaps in reality it is not as easy as it seems...
It must be some upgrade though, is it as easy to install as the upgrade from sp9 to sp10?

Michel

Hi,
Thank goodness I bought a Linn streamer.
At least they get issues fixed with the help of staff and forum members. They also hold discussion nights online with forum members along with the people who make the HiFi and those that write the software.
Why should Naim have all the answers, be like Linn and open source it then you get the best of all worlds.
Cheers

Well, their player interface is already better and the next release gives most what they've asked for in file management. Imagine all this without a forum that has 'it's the best' in every other answer. Personally, I was surprised how unglitchy and freindly the software was from day one. Much prefer a linear path in a heavier code interface. Look at the most freindly and encompassing Media players. MM and Itunes. They're not considered open source.
In reality, either (Linn/Naim) operates well enough that the result you get should be more important.

What do you mean with "Native 192 kHz Playback"?
I thought that the HDX could play them without any problem. Are they internaly downsampled to e.g. 96 KHz?
Posted on: 05 August 2009 by js
192 is no problem. It's a max figure. Native may indicate that there will be a way to get a high res file onto the internal drive which currently is only for CD rips.

I never would have guessed - it seems that that has been your intention LONG before you ever posted here.
That said–as a Mac or Linux user, I'm not impressed with the DS control software (in spite of the promise of sound quality), and there are, as I've come to understand, quite a few Linn retailers who sell the units to retail clients but actually use something else at home, by choice. This is not as glowing an endorsement at, say, the level of the LP12.
Your faith in open-source seems to anticipate the notion that, long after a company is gone, a product will possess some modicum of community support–keeping in mind though, that when this happens it ceases to be a "product" rather than a platform. (It's a great promise, but far too unsupported by experience in other areas of technology, sorry.)
And, in all fairness, there are some companies who support their legacy products better than others–I need not go there in this discussion.

I will add my name to those who have been waiting for internet radio functionality and are upset to hear that it will not be included in this release.

You can add my name as well...

It is a bit of a disappointment, especially since the Uniti already has internet radio...
Posted on: 13 August 2009 by David Dever
...on a completely different platform, with a limited display of metadata comprising a different subset of requirements than those required to control and buffer internet radio streams around the house, across the network, etc. with rich metadata and no dropouts.
Better to wait and get it exactly right....

Still awaiting update from Naim on release date and full feature list of upcoming HDX software upgrade...
I would also appreciate some more clarity on when we may finally expect internet radio to be added to the features list. I understand that this was apparently not on the "most critical" list for the upcoming upgrade but for me (and I am sure may other HDX owners) it is certainly on the "most wanted and expected" list.

I agree with MDM: Naim Audio should finaly state, when the new software-upgrade is available. I have 560 CDs ripped (and there are more about 3.000 to go). Internet-Radio isn't that important for me - but nice to have.
