HDX software upgrade

Posted by: MDM on 03 August 2009

I realise that this topic is not exactly new but I would like to bring it to Naim's attention again. I am sure that there are a lot of HDX owners out there who are impatiently waiting for the next real software upgrade for the HDX (and not the intermediate releases to sort out some bugs).
I appreciate that Naim will probably prefer to launch the software as bug free as possible, even if it takes a bit more time (and external development). However, we are waiting for almost half a year now ....(I believe it was first expected to be released in March).

It would be nice to hear from Naim when the new software upgrade will be available and what new features will be included (internet radio, ... ? ).

I also agree. C'mon Naim - get with the program! Tell us what's coming, and when we can expect an update. We grow impatient.....

This is jut a thought but....

I would put this on the dealer you bought your HDXs from.

I guarantee your dealer, if worth their salt, can get more info than you might be able to get here on the forum. And perhaps if enough are bothering Dave, they will release a short-list of features.

If they cannot source the details I doubt you will get anything here.

MDM,

I sent an email to Naim about three weeks ago and they told me there was no release date planned yet. It's taking very long indeed!

It's now about a year ago when I first heard the HDX on one of the Summer Sounds events. Since that time I've seen the NaimUniti, the Naim XS range, Ovator, CDX2-2009, etc. Don't get me wrong: if course it's great to see all these new developments, but somehow I have the feeling of being left out in the cold... Frown

BTW: Internet-Radio isn't that important for me. Just realise the possibility to add cover art manually!!

Michel

Hi,
I am still planning to buy an HDX, but I am waiting to see this upgrade, actually not so much for what it can do, but just to assure myself that Naim have not discovered a rather large hiccup in the origional model/software which is causing this delay in the update launch.

Hi Barrie,

Nice to hear from you!

Don't get me wrong: the HDX is a wonderfull machine. Do not let my negative comments hold you back from purchasing one!
Everything works flawlessly, setup was as easy as it can get. I have not encountered any problems regarding reliability and/or stability.

I've ripped some 300+ CD's to the HDX. Main problems regarding cover art which is wrong or not showing at all (less than 10 CDs) is due to the AMG database and has nothing to do with the HDX itself. Though the possibility to add cover art manually will solve all this.

The HDX will stay in my system for many, many years (same for my SuperNait)!

Regards,
Michel

Hi Michel,

Your comments are not negative at all. I will still buy an HDX but I do have a Very slight concern ref the delays in the upgrade. Maybe I will find out more next week during the Naim Factory get-together

Cheers

No worries-it's a major upgrade, new features, etc. Well worth getting right.

David,

I'm growing increasingly impatient, do you have any idea regarding the timeframe?

Michel

Yes that is quite clear. And since you have expressed that, and you are the only one wondering, I am sure Dave will personally email you all of the juicy details right away.

There are many, many beta versions going round at the moment, the point of the beta is to find any issues, when these are found re-testing has to happen,we are well on the way and will let yoi all know as fast as we can. I was truly hoping July would have been the date but we have slipped, almost there but not quite...

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your explanation. Could you provide us with a list of issues which will be solved with this update, or is this too early?

As you may know, I'm very interested in the possibility to add cover art manually...

Michel

Klout,

I think the reticence stems from not wanting release a list of features only to find one was not being implemented after beta testing. Then everyone would be all upset that something was said to be included but then was yanked.

Same goes for a release date. If they say September but it doesn't turn out to be ready by then, once again people are pissed.

Pretend that there is never going to be an update and everything is staying as is forever. Then when the update does finally arrive, it will be a wonderful surprise.

Or..... sell your HDX and get the Naim DAC and 555ps and use a PC as a source. Easily upgradeable, any album art support you want. Rip to any codec. Use a NAS now. etc....

Hi pcstockon,

I guess you're right. I shall be patient...

However, I wouldn't sell the HDX. Partnered by the SuperNait it's a great two-box solution which sounds absolutely great!

Michel

I know..... Screw the album art, unless you are going to a LCD or something.

Get the Naim DAC? What Naim DAC - who knows when that's going to be released. As for getting rid of your HDX and using the yet to be released DAC with your computer, how do you know if there will be USB support?
Posted on: 20 August 2009 by pcstockton
Doc,

There will not be USB support, at least in the way I think you are hinting at. Use with a computer will require a soundcard with Digital output, or a USB-to-Digi converter of some variety.

Most stock Mac's have an internal soundcards with digi out.

Some stock PCs do as well, though less prevalent on older models.

Converters could be anything from an M-Audio Transit or the Firewire jobbies others use here (name escapes me).

PS, $20 says the DAC will be available before the update is.

Aiming for November I think - I didn't hear drop dead commitment. Some neat future stuff there.

You're likely right - and not because the software isn't pretty close to completion, but that the factory has made a commitment to making these updates properly documented and idiot-proof as regards the actual update process.

The (lightly-revised) Desktop Client will also get an updated installer that should work with newer Microsoft operating systems–an issue for which we receive numerous support calls.

I understood the November date was when the iPhone/iPod app would be finished, before being validated by Apple. The HDX firmware update was suggested to be imminent.
This is where it would be useful to have some input from Naim HQ. Paul?

Nero, the tech guy (name escapes me)said at the factory visit last week that the next firmware update would be released at the same time as the iphone/ipod app which would be November.
