HDX software upgrade
Posted by: MDM on 03 August 2009
I realise that this topic is not exactly new but I would like to bring it to Naim's attention again. I am sure that there are a lot of HDX owners out there who are impatiently waiting for the next real software upgrade for the HDX (and not the intermediate releases to sort out some bugs).
I appreciate that Naim will probably prefer to launch the software as bug free as possible, even if it takes a bit more time (and external development). However, we are waiting for almost half a year now ....(I believe it was first expected to be released in March).
It would be nice to hear from Naim when the new software upgrade will be available and what new features will be included (internet radio, ... ? ).

Just want to bring this question up, again(!)
I believe "soon" would be an appropriate answer, but any new information so far?
Regards,
Michel

1. Rip 2 NAS (rips to local hard drive then transfers to NAS once rip complete)
2. manual setup of share lcoation possible
3. playlist increased to 500 items
4. ability to move albums from local to NAS and back again
5. various improvement to Front Panel/TV/Web interface User Interface - manage music, assign genre, rename artist, search by letter, etc
6. Native 192KHz playback
7. FLAC decoder updated
8. music on local hard drive now exposed as a shared folder (read only)
9. ability to force a re-scan of drives
10. update of Desk Top Client
I've contacted NAIM support for Item 6. It means that the Digital Out of the HDX will be able to output 192 KHz signals. They have to do this in order to link properly to the DAC, which digital Inputs are capable of accepting 192 Kz streams.
Estimated time of the software release is the third week of November.

I understood the November date was when the iPhone/iPod app would be finished, before being validated by Apple. The HDX firmware update was suggested to be imminent.
This is where it would be useful to have some input from Naim HQ. Paul?
Nero, the tech guy (name escapes me)said at the factory visit last week that the next firmware update would be released at the same time as the iphone/ipod app which would be November.
Hello. We now have December! Any news from NAIM about the software-upgrade? Beta-version must be out - see Hi-Fi-News December 2009 issue. I am still waiting for a word from Naim or better a date, when they will issue the update. Maybe christmas?

Hi,
There is a lot of discussion in several topics on this forum about when the new software will be released.
Currently, I think nobody can tell us when it will be released. I wouldn't be suprised when someone from Naim comes with the message it will be around february 2010!
At the moment, apart from the cover art issues I've mentioned earlier, I'm very happy with my HDX.
Regards,
Michel

Nero You're a wag!!!!
Beta Software should be the final product with some end user testing just to ensure that there aren't too many problems for the end user.
Having said that I don't understand why Naim have taken so long to produce this much talked about release. Afterall, the hardware and software is "Locked Down" under their control. It's not like Windows which has to be compatible with thousands of devices and legacy applications.
Having waited thsi long for the update, I wonder how "bug free" it will be? It had better be good after all this waiting and delaying.

Actually it is completely unfair, however best not to let the truth get in the way of a good joke.

One is full of bugs, the other is a software update..
Both promise much, only one will deliver this year...
We could continue!

Is the software launched today? Do I have to contact my dealer or does NAIM provide some download service?
Posted on: 14 December 2009 by Klout10
Hi Hans,
Today, a so called "final beta" is released to retailers, distributors as well as a number of UK Forum members.
However, the new software is (still) not released yet! Believe me: once it will be released, you'll notice it when visiting this place.
Regarding your question on how to obtain this update once it'there: contact your friendly Naim dealer. I did this for an update to 1.4b sp10. I've received an update disc as well as the instructions...

Michel

Hi,
Today I've ripped a few CD's and the covert art appeared to be missing. A quick check on the AMG website showed that the cover art wasn't present over there as well.
That's what brought up this question again:
Does anybody happen to know if it will be possible to add cover art manually with the forthcoming software release for the HDX?
Regards,
Michel

Yes Michel, it is possible in the new DTC and it works nicely. You simply go to the properties of the album, and click on 'Upload Cover Art'.
I simply do an image search in Google, and choose the best resolution image, and save to a folder.
The upload seems to be relatively insensitive to the resolution of the file - it obviously rescales it to what's required by the HDX. I find anything higher than 200x200 is fine.
Cheers
John

Hi John,
Thank you for your quick reply. I'm really happy to hear that. For me, it's even more welcome than the ability to rip to a NAS (yet!)
Was the installation of the new software just as straightforward as the upgrade to 1.4b sp10?

Michel

Yes, just a couple of CDs and sit back. I think the idea of the beta test was to see if anyone trashed their machines.
The NAS management is quite nice - you define 'Music Stores' and set them as targets to rip to. This means the CDDB info required by the HDX is kept together with the files.
There's additional software for converting your iTunes library if you so wish, and for testing the performance of your NAS to see if it's up to snuff - not tried it yet as it takes over 24 hours! Mine works anyway.
My guess, and it's only my guess, is that the delay in the release of the final software version is the approval from Apple for the iPhone app. Everything else seems to work fine
It might seem trivial, but the biggest improvement for me is the user interface - I can now see the white text on green without my glasses!
