HDX software upgrade
Posted by: MDM on 03 August 2009
I realise that this topic is not exactly new but I would like to bring it to Naim's attention again. I am sure that there are a lot of HDX owners out there who are impatiently waiting for the next real software upgrade for the HDX (and not the intermediate releases to sort out some bugs).
I appreciate that Naim will probably prefer to launch the software as bug free as possible, even if it takes a bit more time (and external development). However, we are waiting for almost half a year now ....(I believe it was first expected to be released in March).
It would be nice to hear from Naim when the new software upgrade will be available and what new features will be included (internet radio, ... ? ).

Did anyone of the 10 beta testers already try to rip to a NAS and also compare the rip with rips from EAC or DBPoweramp?

I've done the rip to NAS OK, but to be honest Hans, I would think that your question would only be answered by those thinking of getting an HDX, rather than those who have one already.
I am pretty happy with my HDX, and one of the reasons I bought it was to avoid getting involved with ripping software, and the differences between them

Search by letter etc. is also a nice add and I can relate to the reading glasses.quote:Originally posted by Nero:
Yes, just a couple of CDs and sit back. I think the idea of the beta test was to see if anyone trashed their machines.
The NAS management is quite nice - you define 'Music Stores' and set them as targets to rip to. This means the CDDB info required by the HDX is kept together with the files.
There's additional software for converting your iTunes library if you so wish, and for testing the performance of your NAS to see if it's up to snuff - not tried it yet as it takes over 24 hours! Mine works anyway.
My guess, and it's only my guess, is that the delay in the release of the final software version is the approval from Apple for the iPhone app. Everything else seems to work fine
It might seem trivial, but the biggest improvement for me is the user interface - I can now see the white text on green without my glasses!

Maby it's a stupid question, but what do you mean by "search by letter"?

In the current released version, when you list e.g. the list of artists, you have a slider bar to move up and down, which IMO did not work terribly well.
In the update, the slider bar is replaced by an Up and Down arrow, and in the middle, there's a button to allow you to enter the first letter. Much more positive.
This is what happens when you enter 'E' for example

I remember someone asking, but can't find it. Anyway, the updated feature list is as follows:-
<snip>Version 1.5 introduces three significant new HDX functions: Music Store support, UPnP™ support and enhanced Music Management,
Music Store support enables network attached storage devices to be nominated as locations for ripped CD data. Previously, the HDX could only store ripped CD data on its internal hard disk drive. With Music Store support, multiple network shares can be nominated as rip locations.
UPnP™ Support enables the HDX to serve audio files to network attached UPnP™ compatible playback devices.
Enhanced Music Management functions provide enhanced facilities to add, delete or re-name genres, and for music files to be deleted or renamed. The recycle bin can also be emptied or its contents restored.
Version 1.5 also introduces numerous refinements and improvements that enhance ease of use and the HDX experience generally. These include:
• New user interface language options.
• Improved network share scan speed.
• Improved network share set up and management.
• Network share content memorised.
• Playlist item limit increased to 500.
• Offline content accessible in playlists.
• Music file transfer between local and network storage enabled.
• User interface enhancements and additions.
• Native 192kHz playback.
• Updated FLAC decoder.
• Local hard disk share enabled.
• Audio file format translation for NaimNet.
Note: 192kHz playback is only possible on units updated by a Naim retailer or distributor or on units originally shipped with Version 1.5 installed<snip>
The last note is a bit of a pig for the early adopters - not sure what the cost implications are but until I get some 192kHz music, I'll be patient
Cheers
John

A little birdie told me that this software update might be available in final version within a week or so.

As most, if not all, HDXs are connected to the internet, couldn't the software updates be performed automatically and at much more frequent intervals directly from Naim HQ?

I can't wait for that software upgrade because I have Win Vista on my computer and Naim software won't work on it.
Also because of Apple app. for my iPhone which will be a way more than a good solution to change music you are listening to.
Thanks Naim for keeping in touch with modern technology.

If you run the Desktop Client as the administrator it works fine. Search the forum, I'm pretty sure somebody will have posted how to do this in more detail.

Okay, the update sounds great - but when will it be released? How long have we been waiting for it now? I've lost track.

Probably vaporware. I think that Naim is just stringing us along.

I think not, but whereas Naim is a great hardware manufacturer it does seem to be struggling with it's software releases.

This great hardware manufacturer also seems to be struggling getting its product out. Where are the Naim DACs for the North American market?

maybe it is in the queue with N-Vi and DVD-5 updates.

I am a new owner in Hong Kong of HDX, the firmware in mine is 1.4bsp4. Could someone enlighten me how to get it upgraded to sp10? Many thanks!
Posted on: 26 January 2010 by gone
Contact your dealer and ask him for an update CD. However, it's best to wait until it's released! Not long now.......
Posted on: 26 January 2010 by Ultramanzero
Thanks Nero, you are right I should wait for the 1.5 if it's just around the corner. Hopefully it will support unicode as well since it cannot display anything other than English at the moment.

Update around the corner? I think it's a very long block.
