NAIM interconnects DIN to Phono
Posted by: Potiriadis on 30 June 2003
Can anyone help me through the maze of trying to chose a cable for my NAIT 3r and my Marantz CD6000ki. Is there realy anything better than the standard cable supplied by NAIM. They do after all claim to have done all the cable research already. I have seen Chord Co. Anthem and Precious Metal interconnects that look the part, but as any upgrade seems to cost a minimum £150.00 I am reluctant to fork out unless anyone can tell me there are sonic differences that a mere mortal can apreciate.
Also has anyone ever bought any of the interconects from e-bay, particularly, the tape 4 phonos to Din ones, are they simply pony or do the job.
Regards in expectation:
Sebastian

Sebastion,
I have used Chord Cobra 2 between my old Marantz and Naim 42-5/110 many years ago. It was slightly better in the treble which produced more detail and transparancy but it lost something in the bass and timing. That wasn't a problem with the Marantz because it produced far too much bass and the Cobra equalled it out.
Whether it was better than the standard Naim interconnects is a matter of personal choice. For me it was more acceptable but not necessarily better.

I used to use a Chord Chrysalis between my CD6000KI and my Nait1. AFAIK is the default option for connecting non-Naim gear to Naim amps. As for the connectors on Ebay, opinions vary. I've used flashbacksales.co.uk, specifically their 4phono-din. It was a massive upgrade over a cheapo bit of wire that came with my tape deck, but how it compares to Chrysalis, I can't tell you. I am to lazy to play about with wire too much, as I hate turning my power amp off.

I would recomend a Chord Cobra 2 as being well balanced and of reasonable price(c.£50 I think). It is capable of excellent results, provided your electronics are up to the job

The Chord Chrysalis is superb. It looks suspiciously like the Naim i/c too!
I preferred it to Cobra 2, and it's cheaper.

Hi
I use Chord Chorus between my FMJ CD23/202 and Creek phono stage/202, this is expensive but you get what you pay for. This interconect has control and detail better than any other cable I have heard. If this is out of your budget Chord solid is a good second, but a bit brighter.

I agree with Stevo - Chord Chrysalis is superb VFM and prefer iit to Cobra too. A lockable DIN to 2 phonos will set you back about £40 to £45.

I found the Chrysalis to be a bit shouty in the mids. I got better results using the TNT-Audio DIY cable based on IBM Token Ring network cable. This might of course be related to my room acoustics.
The system used here is NAD C540/Nait3/HiCap.
Best regards,
Oliver

I had a chap put a custom cable together, and it easily outperforms my old Cobra / Cobra 2.

There is a mail order company called Campaign Audio Design: http://business.virgin.net/cad.cables/.
I've used his stuff and like it a lot.

Chord Cobra 2 is what I use and is very good though am interested in the Townshend DCT100 which is now available with din connections so would be interested in hearing it.

Thanks for the feedback, I saw a beautiful Chord Co. Anthem able with Din to Phono, unfortunateley this is a very directional cable according to Chord and the direction was Din to Phono rather that Phono to Din so I could not use it. I am keeping a look out on e-bay for another so hans off anyone trying to bid against me!!! (only kidding). I have basicaly come to the conclusion that the only bits of my Hifi I can now upgrade are the ones my Wife cannot see, so its cable only from now on, unless I can squeeze the insides of a NAP250 into the Flatcap I have told her I needed so I could listen to music on my headphones (not sure she beleived me, but she let me get away with it anyway).
By the way if anyone is looking for a non antisocial method of listening to music at high volumes I can highly recomend the combination of Headline and Senheiser HD580 Headphones. The combined fidelity of these sounds better than my fathers DBL's and six pack of 135's!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, any further cable dsicussions/recomendations gladly received.

Well I could recommend you have a chat with a friend of mine who built me a cable.
I wouldn't normally go too much into DIY stuff, but the cable he made me sounds better than my cobra 2.

You mean the ones from Flashback? Yes, though I got it direct, rather than off eBay. I have a two phono to DIN cable which I use to connect my DVD player into my system. I cannot comment on absolute quality (it's a cheap DVD player!) but it seems to do the job. Others on pink fish media have tried Flashback cables and said good things.
