DPS turntable

has anybody actually heard one of these?

spoke to the guy who makes them a few times, apparently works very well with the aro (in fact this is the set up he has)

his words were "the aro delivers unbelievable bass power with an open top end"... not quite the aro i know! still, glad to keep it, just need to find a new owner for the LP12!

Along with the Novelle Platine Verdier, the DPS is one of the turntables I am considering in a "ultimate" turntable shoot-out I am planning in 2004. Those people who know me know that I have been known to dabble in a bit of turntable nerdery every three years or so, but this time the LP12 will be used as a sort of reference or benchmark. The Aro and the Ortofon SPU stay, so the turntable has to be musically compatible with them both. What I am looking for are the qualities that the Ortofon has recently brought to my analogue party - namely majesty, scale, warmth, bass. So you can conclude from that Roksans, Regas (and to an extent Well Tempereds are off the agenda) Frown

Christopher, 3500 Euros isn't so bad! Do you have a contact number for Mr DPS.

regards & happy new year to you all!

ps. I am also planning a speaker shoot-out in 2004, this may actually come first since I am discovering that I need more than the SBL's brilliance in my music now, I have lived with the SBLs for nine years now and it is time to find a worthy successor. More of that later!

Sorry to hijack the thread. Could you tell me the position of your 52 volume knob with your Prefix K/Ortofon SPU Royal N vs CDS2?

Thanks

When will that be? I'm looking to swop the LP12 soon... like in the next month! However, purchasing without hearing is a little worrying to say the least, I'm really going on what other people have said. Weren't you previously using an LP12?

Hi Christopher,

I think you've made a good choice deciding to keep the Aro, it's a wonderful arm.
Concerning the DPS. why don't plan a week-end in Vienna to demo it? Vienna is not that far from Geneva

Cheers

I'm not sure I understand...it depends at what level I am listening to, but I find the Ortofon to have a more than adequate output...

Christopher,

A blind purchase is very risky and I would not advise that, especially a three and a half thousand Euro turntable. I am sure you can demo all the alternatives, this is what i intend to do.

Could you tell me the min. and max. of your volume knob when you are listening to the Ortofon vs. CDS2? I suspect the Prefix K has not enough gain for the Ortofon. My Transfiguration Temper which has slightly higher output (0.2 mV @3.54 cm/sec vs. 0.14 mV) has to be at 5 o'clock (with a lot of noise)to have the same volume as CDS2 at 10 o'clock and yet I feel not enough drive.

Thanks

It's interesting to hear of a competitor to the lp12 which works well with an aro. Please keep us posted!

David,
Your question is very nerdy. I refuse to answer it!

However, it seems that something is wrong with your transfiguration (i.e it is not producing the sort of output that it should despite what it says on the tin).

The Orfofon is very loud a 12 o'clock if that helps, but I really think something is wrong with the Transfiguation.

Thanks for your reply and sorry if my question offended you. I am very keen on the Royal N and just wanted to find out if the Prefix K can drive it. Did you compare the Royal N with Kontrapunkt b? I would appreciate if you could describe the differences.

Thanks

David,

I was not offended at all - my reply was in jest Smile Seriously though the Royal N is superb, I compared it with a XX2, Troika, Clearaudio, etc not the Kontrapunkt I am afraid.

Seriously though, I suspect something is wrong with your Transfiguration if you are struggling for volume, are you able to send it back to them for examination.
