Wireless broadband and the young?

Thinking about getting a laptop for No. 2 daugther as she will soon need it for schoolwork - she is 11. It would make logistic sense to use wireless connectivity for the internet, but the Long-Haired RSM is concerned about the effects of radiation / EMF; whats the score?

TIA

Nobody knows. Those using it now are the test group.
Get a mains ethernet connection and remove any worries.

Does No. 2 daughter use a mobile phone at all? If so then you might like to consider output form those but a wired connection is a good place to start.

I hope you don't have a mobile phone as they typically generate 10 - 20X the peak power output of a wi-fi base station. Just a thought.

My kids were instructed from day 1 with mobiles to never carry them in trouser pockets and only ever use them on speaker phone.
I own one but only turn it on to text or phone, driving my contacts mad.
Having had one daughter survive a brain tumour I would not put anything down to chance now.

EMF concerns aside, I'd be more concerned about an 11-y-o with a laptop.
My boys (12 & 13) are not allowed to use my laptop as the oldest had an "incident" that got us kicked off the AOL service when he was 11. He was simply talking in some kid's chat room like a 6th grade boy and someone turned him in.
My wife was mortified, I assured her it was what all boys that age are thinking about (at least I was...).
Best thing that could have happened in this regard, we now only allow computer use out in the "open" environment of our family room computer where all can see what is on the screen at any time they like.
There are so many ways for kids to get themselves in trouble...
I can't offer you any suggestions on the effects of EMF, the research is not conclusive, but I understand your concerns.

the problem is now-a-days mobile phones are expected.

what you are saying is that for example you wont let your kids drive because it is soo dangerous. the only way to be sure that they are not getting radiated from other peoples phones ect. would be to lock them in a lead room. which i hope for their sake isn't going to happen.

i would be more concerned with what they are browsing and dependancy on the internet. as opposed to getting out and playing.

getting kicked off AOL

He did you a favour then.

I hope you moved on to less formal broadband service that allows you to chose what you use rather than ram a set of products down your throat before you have had a chance to think what you want to do..
