Gus,
I've got a pair of Kan 3's on Kan 2 stands and they sound just great. If the Kan 4's are equally good they centainly deserve your attention.
Do make shure you hear them on good open frame stands though, otherwise the bass gets seriously overblown.

When did the Kan 4 come out?
The Linn website lists a Kan III; I've never heard of a version 4?
Cheers

Neither had I. I was hoping for more info.on sound quality. Despite the seemingly endless Kan Wars with my Mk1s. They still hold a certain magic. The first hearing of a new LP was always (well usually) spine tingling. (Shame about the lack of imaging). Did this aspect improve with later models? They surely had enough years to get it right?

Imaging
The Kans aren't much on plonking instruments into tight little spots, but they soundstage about as well as most speakers. Not a lot of depth though though I can't say that I miss it that much.
Linn's Tukans (the older and more capable brother of the Kan III and a very underrated speaker) imaged quite well, particularly when active. They didn't have the last word on rhythmic expressiveness like the Kan I and II, but they were no slouches either.
Cheers
Keith.

linn kan 4:
bought them in end 2001. while not as revealing and fast as the original kan 1 and 2, they suit my entry level naim system (cd3.5/92r/90.3) pretty well. the fun element is still there, and the kan 4's tamer nature seems to moderate the slight harshness of the system.
here's a pic of the system.

got them , turns out they are kan 3, i had to borrow some sound style stands, which are not open and very heavy, the opposite of kan stands i think......they sound absolutely awful with these stands, as willem stated, the bass is far too overblown! i'll see how they fare when i borrow some decent stands next week.....should these kans be right up against the wall like the original ones?

Nope - the Kans that you have are cheaper versions of the Tukan (no disrespect in that) and are rear ported, unlike the Kan I and II, which are sealed boxes. Take a peek at the last 4-5 posts and I think you'll get all the info you need.
Good luck - I think you'll like them after they've been on the right stands and set back properly.
Cheers
