Folks, there is already some noise about a pure streamer w/o internal disks. Does anybody has more infos already (timeframe, price etc)? Tx ralf

Where's the noise coming from?

I heard from my dealer that a slimmed down version of the HDX, without hard disks, will be coming out in 2010 i.e. the perfect Naim match for the DAC.

Sounds very interesting.
If they use the HDX, I hope they will take out the DAC-section, ripper, etc. as well so it becomes a clean media player/streamer which perfectly complements the Niam DAC.

Have to start saving if I want to get my hands on a Naim DAC and a future Naim streamer.

what advantage should this have then ? will it not be an almost empty box then ?...i hope at least it is a stream ripper.

IMO ripping is better done on a PC, it has, again IMO, best quality tools for ripping and checking. I don't need it in a BlackBox, this just complicates (e.g. need for storage (where if no HardDisk present) the BlackBox where it needn't.

I agree with you, no need for ripping from a black box, better let it do the rest of computer tasks for music playback, IMO that is where a Naim streamer can be brilliant and offer a good alternative to a good set up based on a computer.

It's also true that Naim has started to offer Naim Label downloadable music files, in 24bit also, and as such may be moving away from a traditional CD based ripping/playback system to a more open digital playback platform.
At least that is where I hope it's heading Smile

It may be that the link with Apple means that the new DAC can be used as a streamer by connecting an iTouch or iPhone to it .. who knows, maybe even a cheapo Airport Express will deliver the right bits in the right order. Otherwise I reckon the right place for the receiving bit of the streamer is inside the DAC. And if you then added a volume control to the DAC, why, abracadabra!, you would have a streamer and digital pre-amp all in one box. How nice would that be?

That's correct AFAIK. You need the iPod link cable and then use the iPod as the streaming device streaming to the DAC.

There is a lot going on in R&D at the moment. Ask for what you want, specifically, and you might get it.

But discussion of a yet-unannounced product (or yet-started one) will probably be counterproductive, as there are at least three different levels of digital music products on offer already (StreamNet, UPnP, iPod playback), and even more forthcoming products that won't get discussed here until they are announced.

Having spent a weekend at a major CI trade show, I am convinced that there is already sufficient product depth to keep us very busy for a while, in combinations of DAC, HDX and NaimUniti alone!

All,

This is probably a silly question, but given this thread was already running it seemed a logical place to pose it.

Can a streamer dig out music from NAS or USB storage without a PC or MAC running? So if I have NAS but PC off, can the Streamer see the hard drive and pull the music off it?

Thanks

Yes, if it is a networked player that can access NFS or SMB filesystems directly over ethernet or WiFi.
So that would be my most heartfelt and explicitly stated wish for a Naim-streamer-to-be.
I don't care that much about connections to UpNP or DLNA media servers.
Just connection to NAS and Internet-radio streams. That will do Big Grin

So, if I get it right, I could move all my ripped music (ALAC) to a network drive connected to my home network . Have a streamer on the network that then accesses the network storage. Feed the Toslink from the streamer to the DAC and I am off to the races. No need for any permanently connected computer.

Correct, all depending on how Naim builds their, if ever, future streamer. Also the networked drive should be a proper NAS which acts at least as a file server.
This is the setup I use with my current non-Naim networked media player.

NAS (ubuntu based) --> PCH --> DAC --> HiFi

And eh ..., depending also if they support ALAC. My current mediaplayer doesn't and I use FLAC as default codec.

No one, unless built by Apple, is likely to include ALAC decoding on a high-end digital streamer. Not without something else running in between which would necessitate a PC/Mac.

Patrick,

Can you help me understand why not. Is it dislike of Apple hegemony or dislike of ALAC vs FLAC or other lossless CODEC?
Posted on: 15 September 2009 by pcstockton
David,

it stems from Apple's "closed source" approach to things.

I would guess there could be a NAS out there that can "run" itunes without a connected computer. Although this is typically a drive that can handle iTunes generated playlists, not decode the ALAC itself.

Ask them what is up, i suppose.

Next version of s/w for HDX/NS-Series servers will handle Apple Lossless without an issue.
Posted on: 16 September 2009 by David Quigley
Also, aren't there are a number of existing streamers that handle ALAC (e.g., Roku). I thought I read somewhere than some of the Linn DS could handle it too.

I am not especially crazy on Apple, but am using Apple TV as my platform for the time being (with a TOSLINK to a Beresford DAC). While it is not quite up to the CDSII I am very impressed with what it does and I am listening to stuff I have not heard in years (thanks to Genius). Can't wait for the Naim DAC. I think the head unit of the CDSII is going to get unplugged and the PS used for the DAC!

Ultimately plan to get a NAS and have a streamer to access it as the hard drive space on the Apple TV is a silly constraint.

Cheers

I thought the Transporter could handle ALAC, no ?

Steve,

Nope.

Doh...!

Really thought it did for some reason...Oh well.

ATV into the DAC it is then, for a while, until they sort out the HDX properly once and for all... Winker

Steve.
