(old style) NAP250 for only 300,- UKP ?!?!
Posted by: Alco on 27 July 2001
I wast just wandering on the internet when I took a look at the a Dutch kinda LOOT site.
There was a guy offering an (old style) NAP250 for only 1250,- Dutch guilders. (about 300,- UKP)
(see picture of the amp)
He did chnage the DIN to RCA though, and it's the old bolted NAP250. (late 70's i guess ?)
I can get my hands on a nac72 as well.
What would it cost me to service the old NAP250,and how long will it take ?
I have to let the guy sent it to me by post.
(little spooky,but ok)
What should I do ? the price is almost too good to be true, isn't it...
(ps. at the moment my system comprises: Nait-2/CD-3.5 & flatcap/ Kan-II's.)
Greetings,
Alco
Alco a 250 for sod-all cash is always attractive. Bear in mind there may have been more modding than just RCA jacks if someone has so clearly misunderstood Naim as to butcher the input jacks - this may add to your repair/refurbishment costs. Bear in mind that the old bolt-together case can't be brought up to spec; but it can at least be serviced!
As always, contact Naim's service dept (when they return from a well-earned break, 6th August) with the s/n to check any serice history, and discuss serivce options and costs.
Sounds like a steal.
Rico - let them eat Kans.
When I last spoke to the service team at Naim, I was strongly advised to avoid the old screw down box 250. Its not so easy to service anymore.
This is one bargin I would give a pass.

Mick
wait a minute,...I do remember a guy from a Dutch HiFi-forum,with the same name who used an old style NAP250 in his HT-system. (yuk!)
(hmm, this could be the bloke,...we'll see)
So, if I really want to get the best out of it,I should consider an extra 150,- for service and a Hi-cap is a must or would a flatcap also do ?
Would/could a serviced bold-together NAP250 be on a par with a more recent (not serviced) NAP250?
Alco
I just received an Email from the current owner of the old-style NAP250.
He told me it has been serviced once...cause he's seen the inside and "some parts looked very new, compared to others",he said...
the ser.nr. is 1072,so it really is a very old one. (1974/75 I guess)
He also bought it s/h.
Alco
You could use an old SNAPS power supply for your 72, these can be had for as little as £60-£80 GBP but are scarce. Otherwise a flatcap would work. The HICAP did not exist when that 250 was made.
Good Luck

I would not buy the NAP 250. It might not be too expensive, but it's very old and you don't really need it in your system. You're very happy with your Nait 1 (you even preferred it to NAC 72/NAP 140), so why change that. If you want to improve your music, buy a CDX (or better a CDS) or a turntable. You'll be amazed to see the difference a better source makes.
Ciao!

You are absolutely right about me being very happy with my Nait-2 (not nait-1). It's jus that most people say a pair of Kans deserve the best amp,so I thought a NAP250 would be a very nice match with my Kans.
I did not prefer my Nait-2 over the 72/140. The 72/140 was slightly better (in the mids) but the overall improvements didn't justify it's high price, imho. I thought the 140 would have better control and dynamics with my Kans, but I was wrong.
but you're right about this NAP250 being very, very old. (almost 27 years)
I guess that, for the monay of this NAP250+servicing + a s/h NAC72, I can also get myself a very nice TT or maybe trade in my CD3.5&f/c for a s/h CDX one day.
I must say, ..it was very tempting at first, but I
think I'll pass this one.

Alco.
Wow, I see your system is complete! So, how does it sound?
Ciao!

I'm almost sure this is the same 250 we were able to buy at that store a couple of months ago for even less!!! I'm not at home right now, but I think it's the same serial number. Don't let yourself be ripped of by that Laurens!
Hi Mathijs,
Wow, you've assembled that system pretty fast. And you're only a student?! It seems to me you're forgetting the most important aspect of that "job" then! ;-) Nice to hear you like it, but try to be a little more original. One Richard is more than enough, hahaha. BTW, how did you get that Solidsteel rack, is it new? And how much did it cost?
Greetz, Bas
yeah, I think you're right. A couple of months ago there was this store that also offered an old
bolted-together NAP250.
They couldn't get rid off it for months. In the end the price dropped from 1750,- (Dutch guilders) to 1000,-. Now,there must be something wrong then,eh!
The same shop also has a NAC42.5 & (old) NAP90 for
about 400,- UKP. It's also for sale for at least 5 months now.
In this stage I guess I better put my money in a good TT or/and some Kan-II stands.
With a little luck I'm going to a store next friday to enjoy/compare some TT's.
(like the Transrotor Leonardo,Clearaudio
Champion and an old s/h AR turntable.)
greetings,
Alco.
I have been looking for a couple of SF's some 5-10 years ago. I know they can sound really great, although I'm not familiar with your type. I have seen two pairs recently for sale for about DFL3.000,- including the original stands. It was very tempting, but as I have just assembled almost the same system as yours and am in the process of getting my first real job after I finished my study, money is a bit of a problem right now. Another problem is that I really like bassdrums and although I know the SF's can go low, I think they just won't go low enough for me. But I would like to hear how they go on a Naim system for sure, so perhaps I will go and visit CAC in the next week(s) once. Enjoy your system!

I heard a set of Sonud Faber "Concertino's" about 3 years ago. The dealer hooked 'em up to my old Cyrus two at that moment and an Arcam Alpha-8.
I know the source was a limiting factor here, but boy,did these beautiful Italians sound good!
They looked georgeous and sounded even better.
They were 1650,- Dutch guilders (new)
You might wanna give there affordable SF babies a try.
See ya'
greetings,
Alco.
I suppose the power supplies, the stands and the cables will make a big difference, but warm up plays a big role as well in my experience. I'm curious to hear your final impressions once your system is complete and warmed up.
The Solid Steel 6.2 has only two layers, what will you do with the rest of your gear?
Ciao!

I prefer the sound of my old (hand made) bolt together 250 vs a new (machine made) one. The old one is the one to go for if you like a more laid back, mellow sounding amp. Sure, its not as tight sounding or as fast as the new version but I like mine just the way it is.
Mark,
having had transformers replaced in two of my 135s I think that much of this character difference is down to the old (Holden & Fisher) against new transformers.
cheers, Martin
"Hallo Bas,
De Naim is van de eerste serie met serienummer 1072. Verkoop de NAP250 ook los. De prijs is Fl.800,-(eerste versie)."
Tsss, what kind of world do we live in?!
