DVD recorders and digital still camera

Posted by: kevinrt on 12 November 2005

My parents have bought a Panasonic DVD recorder to replace their VHS video recorder. They are also planning to buy a digital still camera and I am investigating ways for them to store their photos, other than just creating prints (i.e. taking the memory card to a shop and getting prints made). They do not have a computer and the photo printers that attach directly to the camera seem to be a pricey option.

Is it possible to transfer pictures from a digital still camera directly to a dvd using a domestic dvd recorder?

Think that depends on the DVD recorder.
My panasonic HDD/recorder WILL allow it as it has card readers on it.
However.. my daughters panasonic dvd recorder will not due to the fact is has no card readers on it .
Perhaps you can get a stand alone card reader and adapt it's output to be acceptable to the dvd recorder you have?

It's by no means ideal, but most digital cameras have a TV out and some sort of "Slideshow" mode which you could maybe record onto DVD.

I'd be tempted to get them a cheap PC to be honest, I suppose that opens up a new can of worms though.

Could the print shop not create a CD of the images at the same time as making the prints ?

... or are you local enough to burn them to DVD for them on your PC as a DVD burner can be bought for next to nothing.....

FWIW I have a DVD player (Toshiba) and a DVDR (Panasonic) both will only play stills from CD why neither will play them from DVD is beyond me. Like Steve my DVDR has a card slot but only the for the SD type.

I think a PC for my parents is not an option. They would not have the inclination to learn how to use it. Computers were only coming into regular use at my dad's work just before he retired and he hated them.

Unfortunately I'm not local enough to provide a disk burning service. they would end up with a full disk for several months if they had to wait for me.

The camera they're getting takes an SD card so I will investigate whether their DVD recorder has the SD slot.

Ideally I want them to be able to avoid having to go to a print shop and have the convenience of sorting out their own photos at home.
