Visit to London
Posted by: Evan D. Jay on 27 August 2002
I will be in London on business in mid-September. I am interested in visiting a few hifi shops that hopefully specialize in vinyl and some record shops. Any recommendations are appreciated.

With all respect your slagging off of central London comes across like the misguided and ill informed ramblings of a daily mail editor.
I have lived in the central London area for the last twelve years and have seen a fantastic improvement over this time.
IMO the vinyl selection in the soho area is the very best in Europe and for an avid foreign vinyl collector provides pressings virtually unavailable back home.

Chaps
I used to work for the MOD whose office was literally opposite of Center point, so I know the area well.
I repeat, it is a complete and utter shit hole which resembles something out of a Dickens novel.
Berwick Street has a horrible veg market with more fruit on the floor than on the stalls, the entire area is downright seedy and the tatty buildings still harbour shops selling implements of a dubious nature, and the "Lulu's and Mandy's" still ply their trade from the second and third floors. From what I have read here, they are cheaper than the LP's on sale in the shops below.
Never the less, next time I am in the area, I shall frequent the Vinyl shops for a Sarah Brightman LP.
Regards
Mick

Here's a picture of Berwick Street:
And here's another with SelectaDisc pictured on the left:
Also the young Noel Coward used to steal socks from Berwick St. Market so if its good enough for him I'm sure it good enough for the likes of us.
Soho is fantastic for record shopping and has some great restaraunts, pubs and clubs. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Now show a few shots of the lower end, you know near Raymonds Revue Bar.
How about the market.

Mick,
The top photo -- which shows the fantastic new Ford Design Studio building designed by Richard Rogers -- is down at the market end looking from Broadwick St. You can just about see the Blue Posts pub in the background.
I won't deny its scruffy but its clearly a interesting and worthwhile place to visit and a great place to go out. Probably not for the old fuddy duddys of course...

Mick,
I would advise wearing a disguise when asking for a Sarah Brightman LP, as you will be laughed at (or worse) in each and every one of the shops there.
By the way, Koobla Records, a new shop there is very good, with intersting stock and listening facilities.
Does anybody know if Ambient Soho actually moved to Camden? I looked at the address, but it was empty.
