Hi Caps

If one is using two Hi Caps with an 82 (as I am) why do they have to be of similar vintage - mine are about 5 years apart (both olive) - would it be better if they were nearer in age?
Surely they should be similar in performance?

Well they don't HAVE to be. Though I think most will agree it's better if they are.
I powered my 82 for several years with an old (80's chrome bumper) Hicap. I recapped this in 2003 and added another newish (1999) Hicap. I found the 2 Hicap solution a worthwhile (though not earth shattering) improvement.
However some have said you might be better with one good Hicap rather than one good one and one tired one.

The guy I bought my 82 and 2 matching hicaps said the sound was "fatter" with two hicaps and he even liked them more than a supercap. He was a musician and paid close attention to details. I would say that when your oldest hicap needs to get serviced then send in your other one as well so they can be matched.
Greeny, thanks for your comment on my K boards dilemma. I took the intermediate old phono preamp out and plugged my P3 directly into the 82. Works great, tho I did notice I have to turn up the volume more. Have had two nights of wonderful vinyl quality time.

I have an active Naim system and recently added a second hi-cap to the nac82 and think that the difference is astounding mainly of space and soundstaging ..It feels more live .Without the second ( newer) power supply my hi-fi sounds harsh and uninteresting. I also ,would be interested to know if this would be improved by matching them an why should a supercap be better?
