Naim USA & Naim UK different filosophie ?

Posted by: Alco on 07 August 2003

Hi guys,

Just read through some old topics again today.
What I noticed was that sometimes NANA (Naim usa) has different thoughts about Naim related things, than Naim UK... Confused

Like:

Naim UK advices Naim owner to do a recap on their amp(s) when it's >10 years old.
Naim USA on the other hand once said to a Naim owner he'd better wait for another 10 years to see if he even noticed some kind of sonic degradation.

Also I found this reply in a topic regarding a recap on a Nait-1:
quote:
My Nait 1 may need a service. I had recently emailed Naim UK, who said 50-70 UKP for a service,
but they also said I should send it to NANA. NANA told me it was probably not worth it since a service could cost $300 or more depending on what they found.

Isn't that a little strange ? Roll Eyes

Who can explain this ?

regards,
Alco

When I asked Naim (UK) about a service on my Nait 1 last year, the estimate was 'bout £125, IIRC. Add in the cost of postage (even just within the US), and you can see where some of the $300 comes from.

I'm the guy who called NANA about servicing my 1989 Nait 2. Someone there did tell me to call back in another 10 years.

Hey, that was my post/Nait1 Red Face

To clarify -- I talked at length with Dave Dever, who said that there was some risk in recapping an old Nait 1. He said that a recap might cause other components to fail, since the whole thing needs to be taken apart to recap. So his viewpoint was 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.' He also said that those that they did work on are given more than just a recap - several components are replaced, and hence the higher price tag. Considering the resale value of a Nait 1, he and my dealer thought its better to put funds towards newer gear. AFAIK, NANA will recap Nait 2s.

cheers,

Dan

I warn people wanting to recap a Nait1 of the poor return on inverstement, financially speaking. They generally insist to do the work, they have a sentimental atachment to it, it is often their first Naim purchase and is used in a 2nd or 3rd system.
I don't recommand recapping 22 and 42;
32,42.5 are borderline.
IMO 12,32.5,62,72 are worth the recap price.
Yes the 12, it costs less than others to do and can easily be dual-railed/updated with very good results.
