Big phil for england?
Posted by: manicatel on 06 July 2006
After the antics of the last week or so, I was woundering what the opinions are now.
A few months ago, mr.Scolari was number 1 choice to take over from sven. Passion, tactical nous, great use of substitutes, etc.
My vote went to Martin O'Neil.
How many people think big Phil would be good as the national team coach?
matt.

Either of those would be interesting in front of the hacks, which is a huge part of the job now.
Apparantly Big Phil dealing with the press makes Jose M look co-operative!
Martin O'Neil is a high achiever, albeit at a level a couple of notches down from what Scolari has managed. He (Martin O'N) gave the impression that when approached by the suits he wouldn't be allowed to choose his backroom staff.
Hard to imagine any manager worth his salt being interested on those terms.
I wish McClaren well but without much optimism that he's enough of his own man to handle the FA, let alone some of the over-paid goons on the pitch.
Steve.

O'neill would have been my choice. After all he was nurtured by Clough, and Clough took no shit from anyone.
It still might happen, unless O'neill ends up at Old Trafford 1st!
andy c!

That's true Andy, and he is occasionally prone to bouts of similar petulance. I mention this having been involved with some club sponsorship.
He is a talent, but that England set-up with all the hangers-on and politicians would test a fragile temperament - unless he could run the show like Sir Alf.
Would anyone be allowed to?

All genius is flawed, and none of us are perfect. I'd say let him show some temper, but if the results were right I'd view that as passion and live with it.

I would hate to see a talent like O'Neil ruined by the experience of England manager.

Scolari would be a good manager, but he's not stupid enough to take the job.
O'Neill used to be a good manager but I'm not convinced he'd work well for England. At Celtic he had a lot of problems because he would never drop his star players, even when they were shit and even when he had to play them out of position (e.g. Alan Thompson in the centre of midfield, Sutton in midfield, various centre-halfs at left-back) which was one of the significant problems with the last England manager. He also appears to have lost the plot badly since he left Celtic, going by some of his bizzare punditry.

Me, I'm looking forward to when Roy of the Rovers - sorry, Alan Shearer - gets a go.

I used to admire Alan Shearer as a player but as a pundit he's woeful. His comments on Ronaldo smack of hypocrisy from someone who once deliberatly booted another professional in the face.

The concern is that he would walk out, not show temper. Like he did at Norwich on the morning of a game. He's not averse to showboating and that's fine. But we need someone who's going to change things not walk.

Yep, fair enough. I think he'd be mad to take the England job, he could never handle the intrusion into his private life.

Can't say I really rate Scolari, after all most of us could've won the last World Cup for Brasil - I don't think they had a single tough game (quarter-final included!)
I'm hoping that Chelsea fail to win the Champions League again next season, and England get off to a poor start in the qualifiers for the Euros.
Got to be Mourinho.

I still think we should have appointed Guus Hiddink. He has done excellent work with Holland (4th '98), South Korea (4th '02) and Australia who were unlucky to go out to finalists Italy this year. He also won the European cup with PSV Eindhoven.
Scolari's record is excellent in major competitions....won one, got to the final in the next and semi final after that.
All better than England since 1990.
And Pekerman's free as well.
We should have waited until after the world cup was finished when, with the FA's money, we could probably have had the best coach available, aversions to British press notwithstanding.
Instead we got Steve McClaren.

I was a Big Phil fan and was under the moon when the FA ballsed up the selection process and Phil quite rightly walked, which IMO should have been left till after the World Cup. Now, having seen his antics and that of some of his players from the Holland game on, i'm pleased he's not coming. Would I still swap him for Steve McLaren - Yes, without a doubt. Who would be my choice if he werent going to be the next Sunderland manager (watch this space) - Martin O'Neill.

O'Squeal (or Wibble) is probably past it (at least partly due to problems in his private life) and his history indicates that he wouldn't be the man to stand up to the big-name players - and that's what England needs. I'm also not convinced that the inevitable scrutiny of the gutter press is something that his wife really needs.
Hiddink would be the man - with a manager about that it's not just about what he does at a major tournament, it's about all the preparation he does on the way.
Bertie Vogts or John Barnes would be my preferred options though...

And there's me reading this post thinking, "Here's a scot talking genuinely and concernedly about who should be England manager!"
Anyway. I'm not sure that Steve McClaren won't make all your wishes come true!
.....hang on.... McClaren??!!! Is that an english name??!!

McClaren was the easy option for the FA, but not IMHO a good one. He's got a tough job to do - phase out the aging "golden generation" while trying to find new players in a league that relies very heavily on foreign imports.

Surely there is enough talent under 28 available? I think the challenge is to have a guy who can manage the egos and be tactically astute ehough to make the best of them.
As soon as you see a manager playing what talent he does have, out of position - the alarm bells should ring.
My worry with McClaren is that he is not the personality or tactician. I hope I'm wrong.

Personality probably not. His level of emotion off the bench next to Sven was positively Celine Dionesque. Possibly not quite as wired as big Phil tho.

Hopefully, his (lack of ) personality may mean that he will not be such a target for the gutter press & Hello type magazines, at least until he can be judged on results in a major competition. More football orientated/less celebrity status orientated?
Or am I hoping for too much?

I hope you're right - we need a football man; perhaps if we had some players who concentrated on football, it might help.
BTW - Is it true, he's considering Rooney for captain?
