Old Quadraphonic Vinyl Question

Posted by: Bob McC on 28 June 2002

I've got quite a few vinyl albums from the seventies encoded in SQ or QS. I've often wondered what might happen if this material was played into a modern AV surround amp what would happen in the decoding process. Has anyone ever done this and if so what did you notice?

More importantly, how the hell did it work? did you have two needles or something?

Sorry I wasn't even a glint when this stuff was out razz

The SQ and QS stuff are variations on a theme of matrix (I think slightly different implementations from CBS and Sony...). It's quite possible that pleasing results will come from a Dolby Pro-Logic type decoder.

JVC had something called 'CD4' which uses a sub-carrier to modulate the rear channels onto (akin to the way stereo FM works by broadcasting mono and a high frequency sub-carrier with the left/right difference signal) this will probably work with a modern MC but not with a general purpose AV decoder.

YMMV.
