Jim. I would ignore the best of IMO, and go for any or all of them, perhaps leaving 'Pink Moon' untill you have a couple of the earlier ones. Pink Moon is great and well worth having,

I would agree with Steve, Pink Moon is excellent but it helps to know him and his other work before you play it, at least it did for me.

Buy all three. They are all great.

That is a great suggestion, the only thing is that you will not have the original sleeves, what you get is : each cover charts Nicks terminal disintegration via superb drawings culminating in a very dark portrait on the pink moon sleeve.

I would get all.

The sleeves are the same in the Fruit Tree vinyl Boxset that came out end of last year as the original.

The edition I had carried the drawings, they were quite haunting.

Nick made three exceptional good albums and as others have said they are all worth getting. Pink Moon is the most difficult to enjoy because it reflects the isolation he was feeling when he recorded it.

The other albums that are worth listening to are Time Of No Reply, Made To Love Magic and Family Tree - these are rather more than compilations and all contain worthwhile songs that are on available only these records and re-mixes and alternative versions of his more well known songs.

Fruit Tree is an excellent place to start with Nick as it contains those first three albums.

I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned the DVD, the documentary 'A Skin Too Few'. Its worth should not be under valued as part of the package.

Mrs JWM and I saw this on a cinema-sized screen at Cambridge Junction the first time we went to see Keith james and Rick Foot do their interpretation of Nick's music - the evening also featured Trevor Dann (author of 'Darker Than The Darkest Sea' biography) and Peter Rice, who as president of the Cambridge University Recording Society was the first to record Nick - we even got a few snippets of his first gig, which are now no longer heard because 'the Estate' (ie Gabrielle Drake) has come down on it like a ton of bricks.

It is a very moving documentary, especially the exceptionally rare moving footage at the end. Poignant moist eye moment.

I was listening to Family Tree last night. Much of it was recorded on a tape recorder at Nick's home, complete with tape his, chat and various goings on. Much of it is blues covers, with a few of Nick's own songs, and a couple by his mother. That does not sound auspicious, but it's totally wonderful, and sounds like he is sitting there in front of you. Even Hilary put down her book and listened!

Made to Love Magic is brilliant too, with some great alternative versions, and an amazingly poignant final track, where he ends by putting down his guitar after his last recording, shortly before his death.

And that's not even thinking about the 'proper' albums.

Sorry Munch, i sold all my vinly afew years ago along with the linn, i held back three lp's, Fruit Tree, Getz Gilberto and Pete Townsend / Ronnie Lane 'Rough Mix', and those went last year.

Rough Mix still gets a monthly play here.

Just to add my vote for all 3. They're all pretty short and cheap anyway! But excellent, nonetheless..

Finally got around to listening to Five Leaves Left in the car not the best enviroment I know Steve & realising I had heard some of these songs before ,liked them then & I like them now , just never knew who it was ,love the strings on this album ,Now for Bryter Later .....Jim
