Favourite Bakery Nibbles?

Dear Friends,

For my pains, I work in a bakery, cake, and desert-pudding factory. I have always enjoyed a 'naughty but nice' cream based cake or eclair, but my real favourites are Lardy Cakes, and Custard Tarts. Who does not, secretly, enjoy a nice tart? Naturally I am famous in the place for being a volunteer to nibble (well more like scoff) the 'taste panel' samples, and I simply explain that the reason it does not shows is that I earn my way, by sheer hard physical work and sweat - though being slightly manic helps!

I am exactly the same weight I was in 1986, so nothing hangs on me, unfortunately. I would love to be a good two stone heavier, and continue to work valiantly at this aim.

We reecently took to making custard tarts, and I am getting addicted. Rose, who is my friend and ally on the second shift in QA, seems to arrange a fresh one each day for me, and after I haqve loaded the steam pan for another conserve mix, once or twice a day I disappear to the lab for a half family sized one, though currently I am off eclairs!

I make Sarah sick with jealousy that I can seemingly put away all this cholesterol without any vivisble side effect, and always do ALL her taste panel! Sophie (QA supervisor) was so annoyed [she loves me really] with me today that she ordered me out of the office, and told me to leave her fridge alone! I had a whole ytart first. I love it, and life is about bucking the system without any harm, to some extent isn't it?

Unfortunately for me, several Polish collegues - not my team - but from the Main Bakery are now in serious competition to see if they can't beat me to the fridge!

Life is full of the fun you make it! Fredrik

What's more, they don't even have a word for chauvinism, eh?
That said, I'd be hard put to name a french cheddar-like cheese. Maybe cantal sometimes.

I had a chocolate and banana cornish pasty in Padstow (from a shop that sold an incredible variation of pasties). It was so disgusting I ate another and bought two more for the car journey home.

Can't beat a good extra strong vintage cheddar - my local farm butcher does one that is still made in Cheddar. There's another variety called TNT but I've never seen it anywhere.

Cake wise, I'll have to go for a fresh cream slice.

The best cakes I've ever had were from a place called Loius in Hamstead - they are (if they're still there) a Hungarian Patisserie. The cakes were addictive.

I remember going there when I was a kid, after taking the dogs for a walk on a Sunday morning, to get cakes for tea when we got back home. There was a tea shop there as well as take away cakes, people would queue down the street just to have tea and cakes in there - people must have waited a couple of hours just to do that (we never did).

Ah! joyful memories - what I wouldn't give to have one of their cakes right now!

Steve.

There is a little village shop round here that gets supplied from local companies.

There is one company does a battenburg cake, and jesus its good. You think of them shit things from Tescos, Mr Kipling or what ever and its enough to make you think battenburg is rubbish, but have some of this cake and you actually giggle its so nice.

I am off to buy one.

Erik, why do you hate yourself so much? Well, what can you expect from people who like donuts.
...you didn't make up the name 'Padstow' did you?

I once ate a very nice steak and kidney pie in Ghent. But the place that made them closed and my life has been empty without it ever since. Sort of. There's some decent cheddar and stilton available here, surely not as good as the stuff you can find locally. I remember eating a lot of tilsit as a kid.

There is a famous Lifeboat at Padstow, I believe.

Whatever, dear Dlexander, the place certainly exists! {Smiley]!

All the best from Fredrik

Padstow

Hmm I like all kinds of donuts though least of all the jam ones covered in sugar. Chocolate covered or caramel covered are best hmmm. Totally disgusting - totally yummy.
