Books on Blue Note Records - design and history

Posted by: Chief Chirpa on 14 April 2010

Hi, I'm hoping someone can recommend a good book to get about Blue Note. I've been half-looking for a while, and have heard that Richard Cook's Blue Note Records: The Biography is an interesting read, but it seems to be out of print, and was wondering if anyone could suggest an alternative.

I'm also seriously tempted to get one of the larger books on Blue Note cover art, featuring a selection of Reid Miles's iconic designs, and even a few early Warhols, amongst others. My local Waterstone's never has any of these in stock and there seems to be a fair few to choose from. Some are (very) heftily priced, but would still be less than hunting down all the necessary vinyl, so if anyone knows a good one to get, please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
CC

I have several books on BN but they are still boxed up somewhere. My favourite is a two volume coffee table book of the BN cover art.

I like Blue Note: Album Cover Art - The Ultimate Collection, by Graham Marsh and Glyn Callingham very much.

Thanks very much, chaps.

Oliver, I was hoping you might reply. I like the sound of your cover art book - I expect the more lavish ones are only around for a short while, but well worth it, I'm sure. No rush, but if you can remember or even find a good one, that'd be great.

Fred, I had an unsuccessful look for yours in town today. Definitely looks one to consider though. For anyone curious, I've just found this great video link of someone flicking through it, and spotted one of my favourites:

And another:

Having looked online the last couple of days, I think this might take a little more effort than I thought, as many of these books are unavailable. So, if anyone can help (or maybe just bump my thread with your favourite covers!) I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks again.

Chief,

I have quite a few of them but always liked the paperback two volume version. I guess long OOP.

Mine was from the early 90s if I recall correctly, amazon US has a 2002 edition but asks $100/$180 for each volume. Might be a good item to catch at a charity shop or flea market sale.

Cheers ... Oliver
