On the Naim forum, why is it...

That people always talk about the sound they're getting from their systems.
Hardly ever about the music, or at least how the music makes them feel...
Am I missing the point? The one thing I've learned to expect from Naim systems is..
Expect the music in spades. Just don't worry about the hifi.
Naim are becoming more and more about the hifi.
Are they becoming less and less about the music??
How do you feel about the sound Naim are getting now?
I'm sure Adam will allow us to be honest
Cheers,
Mark

Hi mark, welcome to the forum.
If you look in "the music room" section, you'll find the discussions on, well; music. I think we would agree that our interest here is divided between the music & the equipment. It may be too biased towards the gear for some, I guess one answer is to start off some fresh topics in the music room yourself. Its always nice to find out peoples music loves/hates, it may even open my & others ears to new music, which is always good.

Dear Mark,
I always try to introduce the 'musical expressive effect' in the Hifi Corner! Without music I see no use for the gramophone, but music does not alter the fact that I remain fascinated by how much one can improve 'the effect of music' with improved playback. Some of the tweakery used by practicing musicians makes most Hifi look like 'plug and play' to me!
The Music Room often has a fascinating range of purely musical threads on a very ecclectic range of topics. There is something there for anyone interested in music, and wanting to give Hifi a rest! If there is something missing which you want to discuss, be brave, and post a new thread on it!
All the best from Fredrik

Ahhhh
This is where you've taken one step forward too many.
We love music FIRST, now, we just want to enhance the experience with better sound.
We can't do much to change what is already recorded, but we can control the sound bit.
We are such a misunderstood bunch

I think no.
Fortunately we have both here.

Indeed. Fredrik's and Todd's posts are always particularly fascinating (if you're into classical, and probably even if you're not). Personally I spend most of my time here in the Music room, but then I haven't upgrade my system, or felt the urge to upgrade, for quite some time so I've been forced to just enjoy the music instead

Dear Tam,
You are too modest! Your posts are most enjoyable, and I only hope that mine are not simply boring!

Dear Fredrik,
At risk of getting sycophantic, very nice of you to say so. I think what I was getting at was that your or Todd's posts contain a level of insight and detail that mine don't (while there are many areas of music I know well, I cannot comment on them in the depth that Todd can with reference to the Beethoven sonatas) ditto, say, your fascinating post on baroque tuning.

Dear Tam,
We can agree that Todd invariably adds to musical understanding, and I am a completist when it comes to reading his posts! Fredrik

For what it's worth I think that the music drives the need for better reproduction of the recorded form. In which case it is the music that drives the need for more revealing hardware, not just louder boxes.
Or something like that.

I used to feel that the new range had lost something of the musical performance in it's search for better sonics.
Having spent yesterday evening with JN's CDS3/555PS/552/300/Fraim/Allae I can say it hasn't. At all.
Whilst I've heard some new-style systems which left me cold, I can also say that his "sensible end of the range" second system (CDX2/NAIT5i/Fraim/SBL) had it in spades, too.
All in the setup, I guess.
You can never have too much "effect on the music" posts when talking about hifi. Hope you're listening, Fredrik.
cheers, Martin

Dear Martin,
I hope you really enjoyed JN's set! Now I always reckoned the new Reference Series was a fine step forward! On the other hand I still love my olden set too!
I think an awful lot of issues ar,e as you say, set-up related! I am a set-up nutcase. I think that maybe explains why I still enjoy my old set after dems of even the most exalted things. It must make a Hifi salesman's heart bleed to dem transfered narrow-band Mono radio tape recordings through the kit, but I don't care so long as I can perceive the musical side better than before. That is an improvement!
Nice that it seems to work on more modern things as well, mind you.
