Selling music by weight

Posted by: Not For Me on 18 May 2003

Yesterday I encountered a marvelleous new marketing enterprise at my local Fopp.

Ther are selling media by weight.

It is like the pick'n'mix in Woolworths, you can pick CDs, DVDs. and books from big tubs on the floor (about the size of a pallet), take them to a weighing station and pay for them.

I bought 1.96Kg of CDs, for £10.

Obviously, my normal highly critical selection criteria went out the door, and I picked CDs if they had a nice cover, were on an interesting label or artist name, or just caught my eye.

The haul included Markant compliations, Sistol (feat. Luomo / Vladislav Delay), A Creeping Bent compo, Arkesta, and many others. Also some inane disco fodder too. I didn't get the A1, Steps or singer/songwriter albums though.

I also got a v. rare C93 / In the Nursery / DiJ compilation in another shop on vinyl for £15. Hmmm Which was the better buy ?

Oh the pick and mix, definitely.

I've never got that whole C93/DiJ thing - isn't it just goth tarted up a bit? Liked Nurse With Wound though. And ITN are OK (esp Cabinet of Dr Caligari)

Kevin,

It is just as well we have found something to differ on, I was beginning to wonder if I was you?

C93 have a long long track record of producing dark and affecting music, both industrial, gothic, quasi-religious and folky.

Listen to 'Nature unveiled' or 'All the Pretty Horses' - they both still send a shiver up my spine.

They do have a high level of output to keep up with - there seems to be a new CD every other month.

NWW are a bit more erratic (most appropriate word!) Some of his long ambient work is enthralling, but the 'english eccentric nursery piano' stuff doesn't do anything for me.

Death in June I always found a bit po-faced, and I was always suspicous of thier politics and attitude, so I am not a great fan. Same with Sol Invictus.

Still when you want to get that party started, whack on C93 'Christ and the pale queens, mighty in sorrow', and that will get 'em moving.
