Bloomin Cars!

Posted by: northpole on 03 June 2007

I had (may still have) a plan to keep my car for a number of years. There's no reason to change it - everything is working a treat, but the 'change it!' deamons are shouting.

The existing motor is a 2003 BMW 330d Sport Touring auto and I have identified two alternatives: 1. An ex-dem 335d Coupe auto which is like mine with afterburners 2. A colleague's 2003 911 Targa manual which is in near as dammit new condition, goes like the clappers with quite a bit more in the way of noise! (surprise, surprise!!)

Anyone care to express a view on which of the three options appeals ie 1, 2, or stick with what I have?

My view is that you should buy the Porsche. I have a beemer just like yours and I'd venture that the porker has more boot space.

Friend of mine has a new 335d Coupe after owning a 996 C4S and for everyday driving the BMW is just as quick as the Porker. Plus it will do 40mpg on a run no problem. The Porsche was a fantastic machine that could be used every day (which he did) and with the optional active sports exhaust sounded awesome. The reason he changed was someone broke into his house to steal the keys for the Porsche, fortunately whilst he was on holiday in his other car and with the Porsche keys on him.
The Porsche is the better "driver's car" but the 335d is a subtle rocketship that delivers better all round practicality/useability. It's your choice.....you won't be disappointed with either!

What colour are they.

Porsche.

I don't think anyone should pass up the chance to own a 911 at least once in a lifetime. Being able to garage it would be essential though-for the reasons mentioned above. Check your insurance quotes though, a London postcode may be rather entertaining!

I've no doubt the BMW is enormously competent but I'm afraid no contest for me between the two options suggested.

Nah, what you need to do is keep the 330d and buy a Caterham 7!

With enormous regret I have just sold mine to help pay for new house - but the plan is to get another newer one in around 3 years from now...

Oh no!

If you start getting bad withdrawal let me know and I'll give you a ride in mine!

The BMW is Space Grey (sort of a dark-ish silver)with a light coloured interior; the 911 is silver with black interior. Both colours look great for the respective cars, which doesn't help!

If it comes down to colour, then neither of them are for you, try a Citroen C1 in your favourtie colour - much cheaper Big Grin

If the Porsche has a fitted rear mounted picnic table, go for it.

Seriously.
Think about YOUR perceived benefits from YOU owning each car.

Only YOU know the answer.

Did anybody ever regret getting a Porsche?

I know plenty who regretted getting a BMW.

The kids school had a teacher training day yesterday, so we all went off to Beaulieu for the day to look at cars....my idea, ahem...
Who do we see but Jeremy Clarkson & James May doing a Top Gear piece, which took them all day to get a 5 minute feature. James May was hooning around on a 3 wheeler turn of the century vintage carriage thingy being filmed from the back of a Range Rover, while a smug JC had the job of trying out the Lamborghini Gallardo in a rather lovely metallic mink gray with pepperpot wheels (like a larger version of the Alfa Romeo jobbies).
I came a way resolved to satisfy my craving for something less sensible.
Fantastic day out.
Face it - one day you'll wake up and find you're suddenly old. Get the Porsche. You can have a BMW or Merc when you've retired and want room for the grandchildren.

Get a new car. Thus you have less money to spend on silly, frivolous things, like HiFi Winker

Jeremy C was quite impressed at the 40 to 70mph acceleration of this car - faster than a Porsche, he disparages it as a good car to have a crash in

Oh well, I've provisionally had my name added to my colleague's insurance for a test run on Sunday in the 911 - to find out once and for all what the darned things are like to drive.

One part of me wants to love it, the other wants to run back to the safer sanctuary of the BMW dealer and grab the 3 series!!

Everyone will hate you in a Porsche, and only most people will hate you in a BMW.

You might be onto something there! I remember noticing when I got the estate model that alot of drivers/owners were women & other drivers didn't behave nearly as agressively as I originally anticipated...

I should probably go for the Hollywood Superstar car - Toyota Prius in anticipation of the local red flag waving brigade taxing me off the roads!!

I really haven't experienced any sort of abuse and that's in a Boxster so I'd probably get double the stick for not having a "real" Porsche.

I do think people tend to assume you're going to drive it quickly, I certainly seem to notice more people tail-gaiting me, though it may simply be because it's lower and you're nearer the back than you would be in a saloon/4 seater.

You may find the interior on the 996 a bit dated, IMO the current 997 is a much nicer looking car and the interior is in a different league entirely (same with the Boxster, a 986 feels very dated compared to my 987).

If you are looking at the 996 factor in a grand or so a year for the OPC warranty, and do some digging at reputable indie's in your area.

The way people behave towards a particular model and marque of car is not to be underestimated. When I had a VW Golf [square shaped and a two seater van], from behind, it looked exactly like a GTI or base model. I was always being tail-gated...

When I got my Volvo 240 people gave me space. They assume I am a slow old duffer. As this is true, I am very happy that people not only expect me to be a terrible driver, but drive accordingly! No one gets very close to me! The result is accident free and stress free motoring.

My next transport will be a push bike, and I shall get off and walk in the town centre!

Dear Mick,

Sadly I am not surprised. I am VERY careful with cyclists, as in over thirty years I have been knocked down by three Vauxhalls. Firstly a Victor, which could have been fatal - I was completely under the bonnet between the front wheels - then a Cailbra - dent in his front wing and ruined front wheel on the bike - and Astra - scratches on the bonnet and wrecked rear mudguard on bike...

I am a very careful driver. But many Volvo drivers are not. There is a certain type who arrogantly assume that they are safe INSIDE their Volvo, and sod ther rest! Of course I am safe from THEM inside MINE!
