Hmmm, I find the dismissiveness of Britney in this thread irksome.

How many "serious" music lovers slated Abba in their heyday as purveyors of formulaic Europop. Two decades later, their place in the critical canon, as one of the finest pop bands of all time, is all but assured. For all I know, a similar pattern applies to the Beatles' critical reception.

I'm not saying that Britney is in the same league as Abba or the Beatles, but I'm inclined to agree with Diccus that she has a few good pop singles under her belt, and deserves some respect for that.

At the risk of offending, some comments in this thread come across as a little knee-jerky. Smile

The kids must be force feeding you Britney discs diccus.

munch - yes, but Abba have been part of popular culture for much longer than Britney has.

To repeat, I don't think Britney's in the same league as Abba, but I can imagine one or two of her singles being regarded as pop classics in the year 2027. Her first single is already well on the way to being just that.

Never saw ABBAs in the act of taking off underware to push records.
Posted on: 17 June 2007 by droodzilla
Gianluigi - the Abba women wore some skimpy outfits, short skirts and what have you, plus much focus on Agnetha Falkstag's bum - the best in pop, IIRC. Tame by today's standards, maybe, but the shift in what's considered acceptable is a general one, not limited to Abba v Britney.

Don't know why I'm bothering - I don't even like Britney's music *that* much!

I can't - I'm pleased to say.

I dream of world where we'll all be listening to Karine Palwart, Kate Rusby, Rachel Unthank and Waking The Witch and the absolutely superb Bellowhead and thinking of that as the real music of the 00s. Though I'll probably be enjoying harp music in 2027 or still waiting for the new HMHB album.

My predictions aren't too bad in this respect, as I was one of those who said Madonna (anybody remember her) would fade away and be long forgotten by now.

Sightly misquoted here ROTF but you know I like the above artists but god the place would be dull if that's all we listened too. We'd all still be drinking Mead for heavens sake Winker

Ewemon

Kids are not really into music much yet (apart from the yelping bit at the start of 'Wipeout')

There are just some artists like Robbie, like Madge, like Britney, like George Michael who may be seen on this Forum as 'not highbrow enough' but they have put out some classic pop singles in my opinion. Mind I was never that impressed with Right Said Fred.
