Take of spring water what quantity you please and dissolve honey in it till 'tis strong enough to bear an egg; then boil it gently for an hour, taking off the scum as it rises; then put to about nine or ten gallons, seven or eight large blades of mace, three nutmegs quartered, twenty cloves, three or four sticks of cinnamon, two or three roots of ginger, and a quarter of an ounce of Jamaica pepper; put these spices into the kettle to the honey and water, a whole lemon, with a sprig of sweet-briar and a sprig of rosemary; tie the briar and rosemary together, and when they have boiled a little while take them out and throw them away; but let your liquor stand on the spice in a clean earthen pot till the next day; then strain it into a vessel that is fit for it; put the spice in a bag, and hang it in the vessel, stop it, and at three months draw it into bottles. Be sure that 'tis fine when 'tis bottled; after 'tis bottled six weeks 'tis fit to drink
Whilst drinking the mead, play The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter and dance around nearest maypole.
Ah those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end.

That's because they are dreadful, IMHO of course. BTW you forgot Kylie and that dreary Collins fellow. Only joking

Mind I was never that impressed with Right Said Fred.
But that's one of my favourite songs by Dicks & Rudge who also wrote A Mouse Lived In a Windmill In Old Amsterdam. Bernard Cribbins what a great guy.
Here is a link so you can download a midi file of the tune and here's the words so you can sing along.
Right said Fred
Both of us together
One each end and steady as we go
Tried to shift it
Couldn't even lift it
We was getting nowhere
And so
We
Had a cup of tea and
Right said Fred
Give a shout to Charlie
Up comes Charlie from the floor below
After straining
Heaving and complaining
We was getting nowhere
And so
We
Had a cup of tea and
Charlie had a think and he thought we ought
To take off all the handles
And the things wot held the candles
But it did no good
Well I never thought it would
Oh
Right said Fred
Have to take the feet off
To get them feet off wouldn't take a mo
Took its feet off
Even took the seat off
Should have got us somewhere but no!
So Fred said let's have another cup of tea
And we said
Right-o
Oh
Right said Fred
Have to take the door off
Need more space to shift the so-and-so
Had bad twinges
Taking off the hinges
And it got us nowhere
And so
We
Had a cup of tea and
Right said Fred
Have to take the wall down
That there wall is gonna have to go
Took the wall down
Even with it all down
We was getting nowhere
And so
We
Had a cup of tea and
Charlie had a think and he said look Fred
I've got a sort of feeling
If we remove the ceiling
With a rope or two
We could drop the blighter through
Oh
Right said Fred
Climbing up a ladder
With his crowbar gave a mighty blow
Was he in trouble
Half a ton of rubble
Landed on the top of his dome!
So Charlie and me had another cup of tea
And then we
Went home
Spoken: I said to Charlie, we'll just have to leave it standing on the landing, that's all. You see the trouble with Fred is, he's... he's too hasty. Now you never get nowhere if you're too hasty.

Brit-nay, Brit-nay...Thy days are endeth love..might as well put the telly on and put yer feet up.
Blimey, I worry myself sometimes..

Hi Diccus
Unfortunately I'm not a Gaelic speaker so I can't understand her songs, but she's a good singer and the tunes are excellent. I have heard a couple of her albums, but I don't own any.
Do you have a recommendation?

No, not particularly, I saw her on Jools Holland and thought her voice beautiful. It immediately put me off that she didn't sing in English but I told myself to get over it. Music and vocals are so often about the emotion rather than the words anyway...................... so i listened longer and liked what I heard even though it was only one track. I don't own anything either
That reminds me i'll have to get round to ordering Karine Polwarts first album (and i'll get the mead in - and a buxom wench!)

Do you need to understand to enjoy or is it just to fully enjoy?
I only ask because some one asked me once how I could listen and enjoy Clannad and Runrig etc songs in Gaelic when I don't speak/understand it.I still "feel" or "sense" the emotion of the music and enjoy it that way.Whether I am missing by not fully understanding I can't tell.
Regarding Julie Fowlis she didn't "grab" me. I still have the JH programm recorded so I might listen again.

Aaah ... the eternal "what is dreadful music?" question
I got the IMHO part.
My take on the question:
Music is about emotion. If it moves you, it moves you. If it's Britney, then more power to you!
If some people don't get Talking Timbuktu, does that make it a "dreadful" music? How about atonal music?
There are music that I like, there are those that I don't. But there's no such thing as dreadful music.
IMHO of course.

Hi Howard
I find it easier to listen to music that is sung in English. That said, Altan don't always sing in English and I very much enjoy what they do. I like Clannad and Runrig too.
I think it is wonderful that languages are preserved. I wouldn't want to see them lost, but I still find it hard to listen to song in language that I don't understand. Hence my fondness of the Operas in English series.

I know i'm playing devil's advocate here but give me Talking Timbuktu over Britney any day of the week. If you know what I mean.
